Hello to my fellow DISers!! I am a 31 year southern US girl who has decided to return to school-- in LONDON!! I am an attorney that is returning to school to get an LLM, an advanced law degree in International Law. I was hoping that all my DIS pals could give me advice on living in London for a year... so I have a few questions, and feel free to give any advice you can!! I need it!

1. I am trying to choose between University of East London, and London Metropolitan University. Is either better than the other? Reputation? Location? Etc?

2. Are there any cultural things I need to be aware of? I've spent time in London, but never more than a week at a time, and I haven't had too much experience with British culture... other than Ab Fab, Mr. Bean, and Monty Python. Although I did get thoroughly engrossed in the EastEnders while I was there last Christmas... I was sad to go.

3. Anything that I should definitely bring with me from the States-- anything, like foodstuffs, I can't get there? I'm thinking about waiting to buy small appliances like hairdryers, curling irons, etc when I get there, as well as a mobile phone. Help!

Please, please, please help me! I am so excited to move to London I'm about to bust! I would love to hear from my fellow DISers-- any advice for this Southern American gal? Can I get away with using y'all while I'm there?

Hi Missy :)

You have probably spent more time in London that me! :teeth:

There is an American Community school near us. I came accross their website by accident, but you might find it useful

http://www.acs-england.co.uk/cobham/index.html

It is aimed at the parents of children at that school. (Use the menu on the left to find out about transport, health care etc.)

You could also contact the Student Union at each of the Universities as they may be able to give you specific info on local issues such as accommodation.

Good luck

I don't know much about the universities you're thinking of, but you might want to try www.push.co.uk . They give details about what it's like to go to every university in the country. They also have a really useful book out, which you might want to consider buying :)

I am not sure why you chose either of these Missy28. Is there a reason why you have narrowed your choice down to these two? The following are better schools with better reputations for their LLM programmes and indeed generally - London School of Economics; Kings College London; University College London; School of Oriental & African Studies.

I've decided on these two mainly because they both have February starts, but also because they have more of a focus on the specifics that I want to study... I have been a prosecutor for 4 years, so I'm not interested in economics, tax law, stuff like that. I'm looking for a degree I can use, not necessarily (as we say around here) a "high falootin'" reputation... And LLM is the same regardless of the school, thankfully, so I chose the schools that fit what I needed...
