Just returned from 4 day stay at Aulani. It was on the heels of a 16 day trip "down under" so main purpose was to relax, gain a few time zones and see the new resort.

THE RESORT: My thoughts are much the same as other comments - beautiful, a lot of attention to detail - textures and layers of decor. Since it was just DH and I, and for only 4 days, we stayed in a ocean-view studio. We had a beautiful view of the pool and the ocean - had my coffee on verandah every morning. The studio seems MUCH larger than other DVC studios - especially larger than recent stay at VB, maybe just better layout. Bathroom very large.

FOOD: There is a shopping center at Barbers Point (one exit back toward Honolulu) with Safeway, Target and a few restaurants. We bought a box of cereal, some bananas and a quart of milk for about what a muffin and coffee would cost at resort. Also bought a case of water (although there is free water around everywhere). We ate lunch one day at the pool side - I had a turkey wrap and it was fine, DH liked his (forgot what it was). About $14 each - pricey. We met friends in town for dinner two nights and had them out to Ko Olina for dinner one night - thought Ama Ama was too pricey (entree's = ~ $40 a la carte) and didn't want a $43 buffet so we went over to Chucks at the Marriott vaca club (entrees about $10 less than Ama Ama and include roll, nice salad bar and choice of potato/rice). One night we ate at a small Italian place at Barbers Point (don't remember name). It was very good and very reasonable (Salad ~ $13, Entree ~$19). One day we drove to North Shore and ate at a "hole in the wall" restaurant that was fabulous for about $7 each. The last day we ate at the breakfast buffet ($27 each). The food was good - hot food not as hot as it should have been - but the fruit was very fresh.

OTHER: The lazy river moves VERY slowly. There was a wind the afternoon we were in the river and it actually whirled around between the buildings and blew us backwards. The engineers need to work on a little more umph there. Also, an "adult area" pool would be welcome.

Last comment - we noticed a curious lack of "Disney" or "DVC" other than character appearances at the pool in the afternoon. At other resorts, we have received a "welcome home" call and often an invitation to a DVC reception. We even asked at the DVC room and they agreed that they are very much in the background. Not sure why that is.

Great review. I agree there should be an "adults only" pool, the one behind the spa would be perfect. I also noticed a lack of "Disney" at the resort. We never saw a single character the entire 8 days we were there. Mind you, we didn't go looking for them either

Aulani sure is a lovely resort

I, too, got blown backward during the last leg of the lazy river on a windy day!
Another design defect is that whenever there is a bit of wind, if you're in the infinity hot tub, the entire waterfall gets lifted up in one sheet, dispersed into instantly cooled droplets, and hits you in the face. In fact, it was closed a few times during my stay, I assume because of the wind.

I believe the pool behind the spa is an adults pool.

Since I still have an 8 y.o. we would check the Iwa daily to know where the characters would be. And daily there were at least 3x you could find a character around the property. And when we were there, there was a pool party, I believe it was about 1:30 in the large pool area closest to the beach that featured some games and of course Mickey & Minnie.

The characters are much more subtle then at WDW....you just need to check the schedule if you want to find them :thumbsup2

Also wish the lazy river wasn't so lazy :rotfl:

As I have a 5 year old, I am quite familiar with the character routines (and live 5 minutes away...awesome!!). They are out for pictures in the fromt of the valley (look at your daily paper) and in variety. The pool party is at 1:30, and surfing lessons are at 4:30 with Chip, Dale, and Goofy. I agree that the pool in the back should be an "Adults Only" pool. I think that eventually it may be.

Thanks for sharing your mini TR.

Regarding the adult pool, we received our Aloha & Mahalo confirmation for our Aulani trip in September and it says there is an adults only pool, Wailana Pool. It even mentions the Wailana Pool Bar. Is it not marked as such at the resort? Or worse, not enforced?

DenLo, Yah, they havent enforced it yet. Not sure why...there are plenty of children's areas

I guess I should have known, Disney doesn't enforce it's own rules pretty regularly.

The Wailana pool was listed as a quiet pool on the sign at the resort - not adults only (yet) - when I was there last November. Children did get in the pool while I was there, but most of them preferred the bigger pool. The Wailana pool was quieter and warmer, so I spent a lot of time there. There were some young adults there one day that actually made more noise than the kids. I like to have a quiet pool, so I hope that it remains labeled as quiet and that people who want to make noise (whatever age they are) use the main pool to do that.

It is such a beautiful resort and I can't wait to go back again.

DenLo, You will absolutely love it though! I am so grateful that its there. I have the Boss (Wife) talked into a trip to Florida next year though...looking forward to picking and trying a DVC resort out there. @WildernessMickey we will probably spend alot of December out there...last year they had a Christmas brunch w/Mickey and friends that was Terrific!
