If they have any future parties, I would NOT attend and would now consider them FORMER friends. What an idiotic thing to do with food you are serving to guests. The caterer should also end up paying a huge fine for pulling such a stunt.

^^ I agree. Not in the food service business, so I don't know what kind of license (if any) a caterer needs to have.
