It has been 7+ years since I've been to a bridal shower. DD's shower is in August and I thought I was going to wear capris and a loose patterned blouse. Then I saw a picture of a friend's shower and everyone was wearing dresses.

So, what does the mother of the bride wear to a small afternoon shower in a bridesmaid's home?

This is in a small town in DE. if that makes a difference. Not in NYC or an urban area.

As the mother of the bride-I would wear a casual dress. Or a casual skirt/top.

I think capris would be too casual, IMHO.

If you were just a regular guest what you have in mind would be fine but I think as the M.O.B you should dress up a bit more than other guests.

Thanks for your replies.

Guess I need to go out shopping for another dress. LOL

I think that if you are not ordinarily a dress-wearer, go ahead and wear capris -- but make them dressy ones ... You want an outfit that won't look odd with a corsage on it.

I agree with the last pp......I wouldn't go out and buy a dress just for this occasion, but I would for sure go on the dressier end of capris. Maybe even opt for a very nice pair of dress pants, blouse and dressy shoes.

I do not wear dresses when attending anyone's shower - family or friend. for my first dil's shower and my recent other soon to be dil - I wore a dress. I wanted to stand out some even if it's just for me :)

You can wear capris - there is casual and dressier. If you are not sure, I would wear a nice/simple dress. Always feels dressier - mostly congratulations and have fun!

a corsage at a bridal shower for the mother of the bride? I have never been to one where that has happened.

I wore capris and a nice dressy blouse for the two I went to this summer. Some including the bride to be wore dresses and some wore capris.

I've never heard of that, either, and I've attended showers in several areas of the country.

OP, I personally would only wear capris if they were dressy. Most likely I'd choose a skirt or dress.

Want to shop together? :rotfl:

I wear pants and capris to work. I am a casual person. I figure if I can find a dress, I will. Or I'll wear one O got for Easter which I think would be appropriate.

I am glad I found out before I got there and felt under-dressed.

Simply because its in a home, i think capri's with a blouse would be fine. If it were at a venue, the MOB should dress up. But in a home, a dress isnt necessary. Would be nice, but its not necessary.

As Mother of the groom...I and her Mom wore sleeveless summer dresses
Others attending wore same or more casual
Ours was a lunch at a venue on a lake in New York State

PS_ I am a SUPER casual person(never wear dresses)

I wore dress pants and a nice sweater to my daughter's bridal shower in March. Some people wore dresses but most including my daughter wore pants. Then, she changed out of her wedding dress into capris and a nice top at the reception but that's another story.

Do tell!;)
I have heard of brides having 2 dresses-one super extravagant with a huge train...then a simpler one-but still a gown for the reception

But CAPRIS????:confused3

I didn't say that she WOULD be wearing one, only that IF she were, that it shouldn't look out of place. I meant it as a way to measure the "dressiness" of her clothing.

FWIW, however, I have seen corsages on the mothers and grandmothers of both bride and groom at showers, especially in the deep South. Small ribbon ones, though, with perhaps one blossom. They come in handy as a way to ID the major players if you are not familiar with the bride's family.

I'm guessing her mom wasn't too thrilled with it, either, based on "but that's another story", LOL.

I keep thinking of that scene in MBFGW where she gets into the limo and immediately starts tearing parts of the dress off. I can see a bride who normally never wears dresses at all wasting no time switching to a non-dress alternative the minute that she can.

Capris are an odd choice, though -- you can dress them up a bit, but not THAT much ... I'm hoping that the groom was wearing a suit instead of a tux.

We've had discussions in the past here re: the regional differences in the formality of what guests wear to weddings, but I don't think that we have ever tossed around the topic re: the bride.

I think dressy capris and a nice dressy blouse is fine for a home bridal shower. I love summer dresses but if you aren't a dress person this isn't an occassion to have to wear one.
