Back when Walt Disney purchased the land for WDW, there was one piece of land he could not buy: the Bonnet Creek Resort. Well, now the owners are going to be building a large tower that will be able to be seen from Epcot! (obviously a ploy to sell a view of Epcot and stay as close to on-property as you can get).

I think this is horrible! And from what I heard, Hilton just announced they were going to build 1500 hotel rooms on property. This will most likely be a tower as well (I would assume)

WDW can do nothing about these issues, and the magic will be lost. I mean really, who wants to be in France (in Epcot obviously) and notice behind the Eiffel Tower, there is a large Resort towering over it.

I wish there was some way we could protest this.

First off, I am in agreement with your dissatisfaction.

However, I dont think it will ruin the magic at all.

Remember that you can already see the Swan and Dolphin from Epcot.

Also, something like this is/was a matter of time.

I personally dont think it's going to be a big deal as, Im sure everything done around there will be done top notch.

Maybe we can start some type of covert operation against them?!

not worried here- no matter what is built near the parks I trust Disney will find a way to keep its landscape as magical as ever

I am sure Disney will do something, I mean look at Disneyland. It has three towers and is in the middle of a city yet you are very immersed when you are there.

We stayed at Carribean Beach two weeks ago and I did notice the buildings of Bonnet Creek being built. To be perfectly honest with you, I only noticed it when I looked that way. I don't think it will ruin the magic...do I think it's rude, yes, but it is their land. Will it ruin my vacation, no, but I do wish they wouldn't do it.

Oh well, that's life!

According to all the TV specials I've seen in the last year, the whole reason that Disney bought the land in Florida was because Disneyland was surrounded by cheap hotels, restaurants, etc. Therefore, they're used to this, and probably have a few ideas how to handle it.

I have to say, though, that it doesn't really make a lot of difference. Hey, even in Paris, the Eiffel Tower (not sure of the spelling) has other things around it. Buildings in the distance are usually cancelled by your imagination. I have learned to ignore the Hess gas station everytime we pass it.

Well, one way we can "protest" - is to not stay there!! I for one , never will!! I am sticking with WDW hotels!!

I honestly don't even think you'll notice.

There are plenty of high rise hotels around the resort already, including in DTD (or around at least). And they don't detract from your enjoyment. Remember you're only in Disneyworld, not on another planet :teeth: and other hotels will be built.

It is a shame. In the UK it probably wouldn't get planning permission due to the height, the whole point is that you can see Disneyworld IN Disneyworld and that's offering a cheaper alternative. Maybe there's some way to lobby the planning department who would be authorising it if it means so much to you?

Yeah, unlike Disneyland, I think pretty much everything directly around the resort is pretty classy.

I dont think we'll see the low budget hotels going there anytime soon.

1) Yes, the towers will be in view.
2) But it won't make a difference.
3) You can already see WDW buildings, and that doesn't hurt the magic
. . . back side of Everest (pretty plain)
. . . parking structures near MGM
. . . Swan & Dolphin from Epcot
. . . back side of Tower of Terror
. . . side of Soarin' from Epcot

The Hess station is being re-designed to look more Disney! I hate high rises you can see from the parks also. In Sea World it totally detracts from the park. I don't know why Disney is selling off land they owned for years. They sold quite a few acres recently. I know Bonnet Creek was not theirs but you think they could have made some kind of deal.

I always thought the entryway to Bonnet Creek Resort looked pretty cool...I had no idea that WDW didn't own that land!! I figured it was a highend part of the DVC or a Shades of Green type set up. What's the deal with Bonnet Creek? Why did they just build on it now? Did the land just change hands?

My mom and I were just talking and we were wondering, how much of the land around WDW does disney own?

I think there is a long story about the family who owned that piece of land flat out refusing to sell to Disney EVER & I think was supposed to have provsions in place for whoever bought it could never sell to Disney either (how that is possibile I don't know but..).

I don't like the idea either.

My solution? You know how the cell phone towers are disguised as pine trees? I think maybe a whole grove of "trees" need to "sprout" in front of Bonnet Creek! Would serve them right. No views for you!

You can also see the backs of several World Showcase buildings if you ride down - is that Bonnet Creek Parkway - in the winter...

And the Hilton being built "on property" will most likely be on or near Hotel Plaza Boulevard - Disney owns all that land, too.

Oh, and to whoever asked - 43 square miles.

Disney could just build a huge wall to block out any views. On the Bonnet Creek side they could paint a sign that says something like "You paid for a room with a view, that's real cool. Too bad we made a wall in front of your view".:rotfl2:

Of course on the Disney side the wall could be a mural of people from around the world.

In reality I don't think Disney will do much. They have better things to do then mess with petty issues. Of course, if Bonnet Creek starts taking business away from Disney hotels you can bet Disney can make life real uncomfortable and inconvenient for Bonnet Creek customers (like endless construction to and from the resort opening, electricity going off and on,sewer problems, an alligator or two etc.)
