Can someone who has followed the Natalee case answer this for me?
Was it ever possible for the Holloways to sue Van Der Sloot in a civil trial for wrongful death like the families did against O.J. Simpson? Can they not do it because it happened in another country? Not that money would have brought Natalee back, but it could have definitely curtailed his lifestyle. And I don't think U.S. courts would have thrown out his confessions so quickly.
I *think* because of the way the Aruban police botched every situation of this case, no one was ever able to prove Natalee was even murdered. I think that's how the rumors and speculation of slave trading even got started. Which, Joran, the arrogant, smug, narcissist that he is, happily capitalized on that mythology and later
used that speculation himself, (part of narcissism,) to keep himself infamous while in Thailand.
On the Joy Behar show yesterday, someone said the Aruban police are once more looking into the locales around Aruba - since Joran confessed - and now that his dad is dead and no longer has influence over whomever he possibly bribed before to overlook finding the body. They might suddenly come up with something now.
The FBI, at the time of Natalee's disappearance, offered and insisted on their assistance on the case, especially because it involved a U.S. citizen. But, according to the TV show,
Criminal Minds, unless a case falls under federal jurisdiction, the FBI has to wait to be
invited to participate on a case - even in the U.S. If the U.S. police do not want them in on a case, and it's not a federal case, they won't go in and help.
With the Aruban police and Van der Sloot, the father, being an influential judge doing his thing, then the Dutch authorities bungling the case, the FBI wasn't able to do much when they went down there. Even if the FBI fell over Natalee's body, ultimately they don't have jurisdiction or any power in Aruba. I doubt they could bring back any evidence to file any kind of charges here. (I'd love to know what they know.) They eventually went home.
I don't see how the Holloways could have done anything with the Arubans/Dutch not really "cooperating." I don't know if they even have wrongful death type cases there for Beth to file. (Disneyadore might know.) At the time of Natalee's disappearance, I remember the news saying murders/disappearances are extremely rare in Aruba.
That reasoning was originally thought to be why the Arubans botched the case so much. They weren't used to investigating such homicides.
