Not sure where this should go, but there seems to be a good cross-section of people who post here so I thought it is worth trying.

The other member of my party has very hard to control Type 1 Diabetes. Breakfast is especially tough, he and his doctor and diabetes educator have tried dozens of things to get his AM blood sugar down. The only thing that has helped is no or very little carbs for breakfast.

The second issue is that he moves at turtle speed in the morning!!! I'd like to have something to eat in our room. We will have a rental car. Is there anywhere we can buy hard boiled eggs or premade quiche or something high protein? Otherwise last time we just did half a bagel, cream cheese and salmon lox.

Also, if I ran to the food court, can I bring a tray of food back to the room or is that discouraged?

My father-in-law had the same issue. DH always went to food court and brought him bacon/eggs, an omelet or something else high protein back to the room. In the deluxe resorts they had clear plastic plate covers to keep things warm or he would order room service.

The value resorts also have covers, we took food to our room all the time. My DS is also Type 1, Disney is very accommodating. Both at the resort and on the cruise ship we requested sugar free syrup for the Mickey Waffles and they had it. Every carb/sugar counts.

I am a Type 2 and my morning BG tends to be high as well. Protein with fiber at bedtime as well as in the morning is helping me.

When traveling I keep peanut butter available with little crackers or veggie strips to convey it to my mouth.

When making reservations I tell the CM I need to be close to the food, just in case.

Jimmy Dean makes already cooked sausage patties that you can heat in the microwave and I know they used to sell already made eggs in the frozen section of most supermarkets.

You can defintely bring food back to the room.

My walmart sells the pre-cooked hard boiled eggs, those might even be available in the food court. If you are making a run tot he store, you can certainly find some premade quiches in the freezer section and those are usually okay to eat either hot or cold.

Some things to consider for quick breakfasts: Yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese/crackers/summersausages (or precooked bacon), nuts, peanut butter, low glycemic index fruits like berries.

And remember, that breakfast doesn't need to mean 'breakfast foods'. Some cold sliced grilled chicken and a few raw veggies can be a good non-carby breakfast that will be ready in an instant.

I read something recently that the Hess station by the boardwalk will order in more hard boiled eggs if you call them a week ahead of time to make sure they get them.

I don't know the number but I'm sure you could find it if you wanted to try it.

Thanks for the tip. I googled this and found the post you must have read! Honestly, slightly leery about buying eggs that I didn't cook myself, but its worth a try. I'm going to give them a call and see how much it would be for a dozen. If it's a dollar or so an egg I think we might try it!

If it's more than that, I think I will just schlep some food back to the room from the CBR food court. We could probably share one of the big platters with an extra side of meat for around $10.

If you have a car, there is a nearby Publix where you can get hard boiled eggs. Pre-cooked bacon is also shelf stable. I see it displayed outside of the refrigerated section regularly. They also have the precooked sausage someone else mentioned. One very good pre-cooked brand is Jones, which they may or may not carry. It is hit or miss depending on which Publix I visit. It is in the freezer section. Will you have a small refrigerator in your room?

Have him try some Kind bars at home. I eat one often for breakfast along with the whites from a hard boiled egg. The kid bars are under 15 carbs and quite tasty--assuming no nut allergy

Think out of the box. A salad with meat, meat and cheese roll ups in lettuce or low carb wraps if he can tolerate those. Tuna salad, or chicken salad.

I'm going to chime in. I was gestational diabetic when I went 2 years ago. I like him could have NO carbs for breakfast. None. My dr kept having me try those diabetic shakes for breakfast because they worked for her. Well as anyone diabetic knows what works for one doesn't mean it will work for the other. Anyway, I just got up early and went and got an omlet. Actually the walking to and back helped my blood sugar too. But I needed all that protein to keep my numbers down. Also started eating cheese at night to help my morning numbers.

I've had type 1 diabetes for over 40 years now. I am on a pump (the Omnipod).

My sugars are a bit out of control at times. I do find that high protein brekkies with no or VERY little carbs work for me for breakfast.
You don't say where you are staying, but you should be able to bring food back to the room. Has this person been to WDW before? I find with the heat and all the walking, my blood sugar can drop extremely fast during the day.
Make sure they have a quick acting carb snack, such as glucose tablets or I use Disney fruit snacks.

Also, try to keep something in the room, like some trail mix or something in case of a during the night low.

I bring the single serve peanut butter, and keep carrots in the fridge. Or the prepackaged apple slices. YUM!

Boiled eggs are a good choice along with low fat cottage cheese or low fat Greek yogurt! You could also do rolls of lunch meat and cheese or fresh ground cashew butter with Apple slices or pre cooked bacon slices!

OP here. We are staying at CBR. Last time we stayed at POFQ so it was a short trip to the food court. Never been to CBR. I know its a large resort. I just hope we are somewhat close to the food court.

He has what's called dawn phenomenon, his liver starts creating glucose in response to the waking hours about 4 or 5 am and his blood sugar starts to spike. The scary thing is that between midnight and 3 am he is prone to lows so they can't raise the basal rate of his insulin on his pump too quickly in case there is some type of subtle change in this pattern. This is why his AM blood sugar is really hard to control. I guess our insurance should cover a continuous blood glucose monitor now. He's trying to work out the details since we don't have an approved in-network supplier. I'm hoping he can get it before we go on our trip.:thumbsup2

His breakfast at home is usually a couple of sausage patties or canadian bacon. He can do 1 or 2 carbs for breakfast when we are at Disney because he does drop with all the walking. By 10 or 10:30 his blood sugar starts to plummet and he usually eats half a lara bar or a small Cliff bar.

I think I'm going to see about getting the hard-boiled eggs. We'll probably do food court a couple of days too. Thanks for all the helpful info and suggestions.

Have a great trip!!

Ftr, my niece got the continuos monitor a year ago. At 17 she was finally able to get her drivers license because of it. They had no clue she was dropping drastically in the night due to night time highs and and morning highs.

DD11 was diagnosed last september and we started on the CGM in January. It is wonderful. We do overnight checks everynight but with the CGM we are able to let the high/low alarms wake us instead of setting our alarm for a certain time. Sometimes I even get a full nights sleep. It has its downsides to though because you can see every after meal spike and so it sometimes looks like a roller coaster on the screen.

She does have a harder time with carbs in the morning so she has a different carb ratio for breakfast than she does for lunch/dinner. I don't think she has the dawn phenomenon though, her morning spike has more to do with what she eats or doesn't eat. For now anyway. Like all things D, it changes constantly.

We do things like multigrain english muffin with peanut butter. Or sometimes I will scramble her eggs in the morning. A couple days a week she has greek yogurt. I always try to have some carb that she takes insulin for. When you eat a meal that is mostly protein and no or very little carb the body will convert some of the protein to glucose and I find we then need to give some insulin to cover the protein. It just gets too difficult and is easier to add in some carbs with each meal/snack to cover with insulin.

Some other ideas would be apple slices with peanut butter, or even just peanut butter crackers. Cheese slices/string cheese or strawberries would be easy too.

My Mom's diabetes was like this, too. It was so hard to control her levels overnight and into the morning. Very scary for her and for us, and very tricky for the doctors to plan...they were constantly tweaking things for her and it was very frustrating at times.
