We had a very scary incident tonight with one of our pups. It was probably a once in a million occurrence but it really shook me. And now we need new dog collars that will release if tangled on anything. What are you using?

We have a standard white picket fence in the backyard, which is about 4 ft tall. Our 18 month husky was at the fence and jumped up to see me. Doing so she jumped high enough and close enough to the fence that her collar actually got caught on the fence picket and it began to strangle her. Fortunately my son was standing right next to her and was able to lift her up and off the fence immediately.

Was it a choke collar?

Glad someone was there. My neighbor had something similar happen.

His dog was a jumper. The fence was a 6 foot cedar privacy fence. When mowing the grass the dogs head would appear and disappear as I walked along the fence with the mower. If he was outside he was jumping to peer over the fence.

One day my neighbor heard a horrible squeal coming from outside. He looked and saw his dog hanging from the top of the fence by his paw. Another neighbor was mowing, the dog was jumping, and had got the top of a picket through his paw and was hanging off the ground only supported by his paw.

Before he could get to his dog the neighbor mowing had broken the picket which released the dog.

In the end the dog was fine.

After that the neighbor bought an electric fence controller and strung a wire along the middle top of his fence. A few times the dog would jump, push off the fence and wire, and scream as he was shocked. Then he stopped jumping against the fence instead staying 10 feet back and jumping there.

That is very similar to how my fiends got their dog. He kept hopping the fence, then one time he got his paw hung up. Man, she walked around to tell the neighbors, but they didn't want to do anything nor take care of the dog. They told her that if she wanted to take care of him she could have him. They did, and got ol' George here.

I’m so sorry to hear about that—it must’ve been terrifying! I’m really glad your son was able to react quickly. For situations like this, I know it’s important to have a collar that’s safe and can release if needed.

I have never put an actual collar on my dogs, only step-in harnesses, so you might consider that. I like the ones made by Cetacea best but there are many on the market.
