Bread makers? I need some advice

I have had what I think is a great idea. I could be wrong, I've been wrong before (just a couple of times though ;) )

My mother is quite ill, her stomach was removed because of cancer. She is having a hard time taking in enough food to remain healthy.

I'm particularly worried about her protein intake. She is going to start chemo next week and I think she needs extra protein to keep her cell building at an optimal level.

Her physician told her to eat a low carbohydrate diet (now she is going to lose weight so fast and she is already thin).

So here was my idea: I have recipes for low carbohydrate bread that has 24 grams of protein per slice. I thought I would get a bread maker and make these breads for her. Melted cheese on a half slice of bread is about all she can eat at one time. At least this way she would be getting a healthy dose of protein.

So, what is the point of all this? I need advice about bread makers. How many of you own bread makers and do you like the machine you are using. What should I look for in a good breadmaker?

Anyone have advice for me?

Kath - I love my breadmaker. The one thing I find though is if we don't eat it fast enough, it starts to mold quickly. And I've tried EVERYTHING. It just seems that there aren't enough "artificial" preservatives in it to keep it from molding so fast. But if perhaps you could share a loaf with her (if that would be possible), then it's a great thing to do. My downfall, though, is that I love bread and it LOVES me too much too....and if I don't eat it and it molds I feel guilty so I eat it - which isn't necessarily good for me.

Good luck sweetie....

What worries me is her eating bread at all. I know with gastric bypass patients that bread is a nono because of its texture. IT can easily get trapped in the very small stomache/intesitnes used as a stomache. I know someone who had to have her digestive system "flushed out" because of the bread from a sandwich getting stuck. Is bread on the list of foods she can eat?

I also doubt a low carb bread would work in a bread machine, especially if it is a sprouted bread.

You might want to try some soy recipes that are high in protein, or even soy milk (high in protein)

It's a "Breadman Ultimate". I LOVE bread (and unfortunately, it loves me  ) and for years have been making bread by hand. For the longest time I didn't want a breadmaker because it couldn't possibly make bread as good as I do ;) . Well, I finally got one a few years ago and I love it! Throw all the ingredients in and away it goes!

I will agree that fresh bread seems to mold quicker, so if I don't plan on using all of the bread quickly I'll either freeze it or put it in the fridge.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom!
