Ok I'm getting braces on my teeth soon. And I want to talk to someone who experienced braces before.

How do they feel? How long do they have to stay on? Are there foods you can't eat? Any other limitations or things in life you have to stop because of the braces?

They feel...to be honest, very very weird for the first few weeks. It's like you have an extra set of teeth, haha.

They stay on for however long they have to stay on for. I had my bottom ones for 1 1/2 years, top for 2 years. It varies.

Foods you can't eat...not too many limitations. Avoid bubble gum and really really sticky foods. Take it easy on popcorn, it's a pain to try and get kernels out of braces!

Nothing you can't do! It's just a pain you have to go through for a couple years :goodvibes

My best friend has braces, she hates them.
I dunno if I have to get braces or not. Probably not. I only have one tooth (top left) that is just a smidge off. I'll probably get a retainer. All my other teeth are perfectly straight

They hurt for the first few weeks, but after that it feels like its always been a part of your mouth. The amount of time they stay on depends on the condition of your teeth and how well you take care of them. There are a lot of limitations, like gum, sticky foods, popcorn and some other stuff.

Good luck with the braces.

Most of those questions will/can be answered by your orthodontist.

The very next morning after I got them on I had a little trouble eating breakfast, but nothing severe.

Wax will probably become you best friend for a few days; don't be afarid of using it!

Sometimes adjustments and different wires can make you a little sore, but nothing you can't handle.

The best advice I can give is this: Do exactly as you orthodontist tells you.

If you ever need rubber bands and they tell you to wear them all day aside from eating, DO IT. Don't wait to put them back on because you will forget and then it will have been a few hours and that's wasted time.

Same with retainers. Wear them exactly how you are told.

I was originally given the estimate of about two years when my braces were put on. I had them off in a little over a year. I asked why it went so much faster and they told me it was because I did such an amazing job of keeping up with my rubber bands and (now, after the braces) my retainer. They over estimate the time sometimes because they are trying to factor in that wasted time I was talking about.

I became almost religious about my braces. As soon as I finished eating, the rubber bands went back on. Same with my retainer when I had to wear it all day. I have had them off for two years and I still make sure to wear my retainer at night. It probably wouldn't be a big deal if I forgot for a few days or just stopped, but I don't want to take that chance.

I guess I have really sensitive lips because they irritated the crud out of mine for about two weeks when I first got them. I thought I was going to die (I'm not real tolerant of pain). Once you get over the initial hurtle of getting them on it's not too bad. You just have to eat soup and pudding and ice cream whenever you get them tightened because you'll be sore for a few days and it'll hurt to chew.

The worst parts were me were the things I had to have that isn't standard. I had to have a pallet expander(to make my pallet wider) and springs(to close some really big gaps.), which not everyone needs. They were by far the things that hurt the worst. Hopefully you won't need either.

They'll give you a list of stuff you can eat but it's more about being careful how you eat things. I eat a lot of the stuff they said I couldn't and have never broken anything. You just have to make sure to chew slowly and carefully if you're eating something super crunchy or hard. I do steer clear of popcorn though because it really hurts if you get a kernel stuck in your brackets and it's hard to get them out too.

Oh and make sure to have a big supply of wax because you'll get cuts and sores from the braces rubbing on your lips. Nothing is worse than having a big sore and nothing to smooth it over with. :headache:

they hurt for maybe a week? once you get used to get to them you don't even feel them. Sometimes I forget I even have them on! Are you getting top and bottom on at the same time? because I got my top ones on August of 09 and my bottom ones may of this year. In my opinion the bottoms hurt slightly more and take a little longer to get used to but nothing too crazy.

You get used to them, you really do.
Then when you get them off, your teeth look really weird to you without the braces haha. I was like "my teeth look huge!" when I got them off.

I only had them for a year and 4 months :)

They feel really, really strange at first. They also feel odd when they come off.
Wax is amazing.
Do what your orthodontist said; it's for your own good.
I had metal in my mouth for 5 years. (not just praces; those were, like, 2 1/2 for both top and bottom)
Power chains hurt like there's no tomorrow. So does having your braces tightened. Don't worry, though; they only hurt for 1-2 days (power chains) and a few hours (getting 'em tightened).
I could not stay away from my love that is popcorn. DO NOT EAT POPCORN. Or anything else on teh "banned" list. It can break brackets and could get stuck; it's a nightmare.
You may have some issues playing an instrument. I had to drop band in 5th grade (never went back, hahaha) because I could not play flute with my braces on.

Braces are definitely tough to have. I'm supposed to get mine off in like 4 or 3 years. I have them for awhile but my teeth are seriously messed up. Moving on... getting them on takes forever, but after that (unless you get elastics) usually only takes like 20 minutes for appointments. Usually the hurt for the first week and you'll be wanting to eat soft foods, so remember that. This also goes for most every time you have them tightened. I'm probably not the person to talk to when it comes to food since I've broken all the rules. Gum, taffy and really sticky candy is not the best, I have gum now but its not the best and I know it. Don't follow my example. Popcorn, you can eat but be very careful of the kernels, because if they get stuck in your gums you can get gum disease. Pretzels (usually the say no pretzel STICKS on the list, but regular ones) you have to be careful with two, since both times I've ripped out a bracket, its because of pretzels. Apples (not cut) and Corn on the cob, you may want to be cut up or shaved off, since its hard to eat them since it feels weird with braces and a lot gets stuck in your braces and it's a mess... It seems confusing now but gets really easy over time. If some things you are confused about, usually the orthodontist explains things.

it makes your teeth feel sorta heavy. wax will become your friend!! ahaha. uhm as of time wise it all depends. my friend had braces for three years and never wore bands so a week before she was supposed to get them taken off she doubled her bands giving her a cross bite and had to wear them for another 2 years.

whereas i only had mine on my front eight teeth top and bottom for eight months.

I just have to say... LUCKY!

I have had mine for almost three years. Hopefully they come off soon. When i first got my braces, they felt really weird and they tasted like metal. But it goes away soon. Some things you can't eat are taffys, gum, and hard candies. Believe me, they won't be that bad.

At first, you have trouble closing your mouth since your lips get sort of caught on the brackets and then you look kinda awkward. You also talk weird, so if people notice, just say "I just got braces. It's hard to talk."When you first get them, your wires might poke your cheeks. Dry the wire and bracket with guaze and then apply wax to the needed spot. After awhile, you feel little bumps but sometimes you forget they're on. Eat foods like pudding, applesauce, Rice Crispies, Cheerios, and other cereals that melt in your mouth. You can't eat chewy candies like Starburst, Tootsie Rolls, gum, or carmel chews. Many people also think no popcorn, but it's fine as long as you don't eat it when you first get them on and avoid hard pieces. Eventually, you can eat almost anyting! Just have a toothpick nearby when you eat pretzels since they really get caught in the brackets. How long they have to stay on depends on your teeth. Your orthodontist will tell you about how long when you first get them on. You may also need rubberbands, retainers, headgear, or other stuff, so those could effect how long before you have teeth with nothing on them that's related to braces. When you're feeling down about them, just picture your movie star smile when you get them off! :jumping1:

I was in some serious pain when I first got metal braces. I cried because the pain was so bad. They're extremely uncomfortable in addition to being painful... I wanted to cry every time I got them tightened! My orthodontist ended up giving me tylenol with codeine.

Eating everything is a pain, I'm not kidding. They usually give you a list of what you can and can't get.

After the year I had braces (I got them taken off after a year and was going to get a 2nd set in 4-6 months), when I finally got my retainers, I wasn't able to keep them in while I slept because I had learned to take them out with my tongue, and I spit them out every night. My teeth shifted back to their original position.

Two years after that, I got invisalign. It's not THAT much more expensive, much more comfortable, removable (but I can't remove it with my tongue xD) and basically invisible. It's also quicker than metal braces.

Well, I have had braces/ a retainer since I was in third grade, and ihope your teeth aren't nearly as bad as mine were, otherwise you'll have them on for a long time. But they can hurt and make your mouth feel sore up to a week after you get your braces on and any time they tighten them. But any other time, they really isn't so bad. There are technically foods you aren't supposed to eat, and I don't know what your parents are like, buit mine let me eat anything like tha that I want, as long as I eat it carefully, and it doesn't charge my mom a bunch of money if I break something. T he thing that really urks me about braces is that they make me salivate more. My friends get pretty annoyed when I spit all over them. And people I don't know get even more annoyed! But there isn't really much to worry about. You will look like a super-star when you get them off!

I have braces at the moment,I hate them.

The first 2 weeks you feel like you have something in your mouth that you want to swallow. Then you start to grow to them.I had them for 2 years, and hopefully I'm getting them off next year. It's hard to close your mouth with them, and you have to be careful you don't break any of the wires and stuff,or you would have to get them fixed, and trust me it's no fun. I broke like 3 things, and I had them fixed the same day,my mouth hurt like forever ):. You probably would have to get your braces fixed every "so" months,it's no fun cause your mouth hurts like crazy. They tell you to brush your teeth 3 times a day,but how can you when you have school? My suggestion is buy these things called "Wisp",I use them in school when I'm at lunch,no toothpaste required (:

There's some items you can't eat:
- Gum
- Lollipops (Hard Candy)
- Apples,Pears
- Chewy Food or Candy (Airheads)
- Crunchy Chips (Doritos)

I still chew gum and eat chips,ha ha I'm bad.

They also make you wear rubber bands in your mouth,I haven't recently since I've ran out,and I only wear them at night.

Honestly, they suck. I've had them for six years. They're painful. BUT, I'm getting mine off Monday and now my teeth are straight as can be! So they suck, but they're worth it.

My mom cals me the million Dollar mouth. I started in fourth grade.....had them for seven years, with three sets of retainers, a palet expander, rubber bands, and five mouth surgeries. I had probably the worst mouth anyones ever seen. I got them off last October and just had my wisdom teeth pulled, so thats the end of my mouth problems. Honestly they arnt that bad...yeah you cant eat EVERYTHING but try to chew it slow like doritios or popcorn and you will be fine. I honestly only craved a carmel apple the whole time I had braces. I FINALLY got one after seven years and I LOVED it. So it wont be that bad, it can always be worse. It will be all worth it in the end when you have a beautiful smile.
