Braces for 8 year old...what is the going cost

My 8 year old need braces soon....first year just tops and later bottoms for a total of 2 1/2 years they said today.....what is he going cost....??????

Around here...a full set of ortho is around 4200.00. The orthodontist are great about working out payment plans here.

Where we lve you have to get two "phases". I'm on my second. And it's 3,000 per phase.

Amazing! They even push it at 8 years old. When the dentist mentioned it regarding DS at 10 I told him forget it for now. Didn't even have the 12 year molars!!! I hear of kids that get them on when they're young, then they need them on again when they're older. Not going there! He can wait for high school. Hope you find something reasonable.

in this area, NH, orthos insist that all adult teeth are in (or at least all baby teeth out) and going rate is around $5K

We just made the last payment: $4500.

DD got the full braces at 10, she had all her adult teeth. She had a retainer at 8.

We will be going through this with my 9 year old in the fall. We have already had the first ortho appointment and was told that the first phase could run between $1600-2900. There is a chance that he may need a second phase in his teen years, but they can not predict that at this point. My DS is in desperate need of braces now as his front tooth is totally sideways because he had an extra adult tooth in the middle (top) that turned his adult tooth sideways. He also has very little room in his mouth and a lot of crowding. He has had a total of 6 teeth pulled, three just two weeks ago and should return to the ortho in September. I really hope he won't have follow on problems and need braces in is teen years, but if he does we will just have to deal with it.

I had 2 quotes for my dd's braces she just got in May
1st was $3400 total
and 2nd was $5200 total

after much deliberation - and a consultation with or regular dentist we went with the $3400....
quess we got off cheap by this thread!

WOW! 8 year olds need braces? My sis is 8 and hasn't even lost all her baby teeth yet, not even close to losing them all. I couldn't imagine her needing them right now

Just make sure the orthodontist company won't up and move out of town. They are a corp. that come to town undercut the price of other orthos then pull out. The kids end up in braces years longer and it ends up costing more than the money they saved. Corp. have already been paid. Do not refund any money and the Dr. keeps changing in their office.

I am a dental hygienist and would suggest waiting a few years. Many dentists are beginning to jump the gun with the diagnosis of needing braces when children aren't even through developing. At 8 you don't even have all of your molars. Unless there are special circumstances you should be able to hold off a while. They thought I needed braces at 8 as well and ended up with a perfect smile, braces free! If you get a child into braces this early I can almost guarantee another round. I would suggest waiting.

ditto. I'd be looking rather suspecious at any denist that recommended that young.

They do them here at an alarming young age- when DD was in 2nd grade- a fellow student had them- he was 7. It disgusts me that orthodontists would push these for kids who do not have all of the permanent teeth in. Thankfully my dentist is on the same page as me, and refuses to send kids to an ortho until they have matured to the poing of PERMANENT teeth.

Thankfully my girls have pretty much perfect teeth, and hopefully if they follow suit as they have they wont need them. But there would be NO way they'd get braces until they have lost their baby teeth, and gotten big teeth.

My 9-year-old just had a dentist appointment last week. We just changed denists due to new insurance. The new dentist told me that my son is definitely going to need braces, but not until his permanent teeth are in, probably not until he is 12 or 13.
It does seem like I see kids younger and younger with braces.

Our neighbor's son just recently got braces, and they went to a dental teaching hospital. It was more than 1/2 the cost of some other quotes they had received.

Now I am really unsure what to do......they said she needs about 5 baby teeth pulled and 4 permanent ones by an oral surgeon.....but not till the braces are on....2 of her permanent teeth atr totally blocked out....HELP

I'd get a second opinion. I was told my ds needed braces at 8 too. I said no way, he's too young. There was no way, maturity wise he could handle it, let alone he had alot of baby teeth still. He's 10 now. I know he'll need them, but he's still too immature. There is no emergency with him, so it can wait.

Where I live, it is very common for children to have some sort of orthodontic appliance in their mouths at young ages, whether braces or expanders. I know a six year old in braces, and I known many 2nd graders in braces. These kids are pretty much guarenteed to have the braces again around 6th-8th grade. And most parents don't even think twice about it - they want their children to look good, and will do anything to make sure their smiles are perfect. These parents want their children "fixed" of their flawed teeth now, not later!

I also think parents are easily talked into early orthodontic treatment, since the prevailing attitude is that you are a bad, neglectful parent if you don't!

As for costs around here for 2 phase treatment, I think between 5,500 and 6,000. And everyone will pay it gladly.

Sorry for the ranting - I am an adult in full braces, and at my ortho's office, I am surrounded by seven year olds, not teen-agers!!! Some of these kids just don't look ready for dealing with their braces/appliances/retainers. I actually saw a small 8 year oldish girl being talked to sternly because she was not wearing her headgear enough! She seem just too young.

We paid $4500 for DD's braces, but she only needed them for 14 months. Our ortho waited until the baby teeth were all out and some more permanent teeth also came in. She was 11 1/2 when they went on.

I would get a 2nd and maybe even a 3rd consult. Ask around and see who other parents are using and get referrals; if you trust your dentist get referrals from him. Ask each ortho if/why she should have them so early and not after the baby teeth are gone -- maybe in your daughter's case it is necessary. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions -- you're paying them big bucks, it's their job to answer your questions satisfactorily if they want your business!

I just had DS8 at the dentist last week for a regular check up. I remember last year when his bottom 2 permanent teeth had come in, they were extremely crooked. The dentist said then that when his others beside them came out, it would give him more room and they would straighten right up - and they did. Now his top 2 are crooked and the dentist said jokingly that he has too many teeth for his mouth - you can tell there is not enough room right now for his permanent teeth. He thought he might need to pull some teeth to make room for the permanent ones to come in but he took an x-ray and found the permanent ones were high enough up that he wants mother nature to take its course. He said it's too early to tell now whether he will need them or not. Anyway, I asked just out of curiosity what age kids got braces. He said that kids are doing it younger now days - at the age of 12! He said he thought it was probably because at age 12, braces are cool, at age 15, they aren't. I'd definitely get a 2nd opinion.

Thanks eveyone....I am calling for a second oinion consult today.....it has been bothering me all night.....I don;t want to pull permanent teeth on her yet ....she is going to be tall....her dad is 6'8" and she is already 5'1" at 8..I just have a feeling her jaw hasn't caught up yet in growth....I will let you know what they say....thanks again
