Braces and Metal Plates??! Silly Q??

Hi Everyone

Possibly the most silliest question but its a bit of a concern...!!

My DD14 has braces, and my DS16 has metal plates in his arm from breaking it a couple of years ago....

Will these metal objects in my kids' bodies set off the alarms at the airport?!

Obviously my DD can show her braces with a nice smile, but proving my DS has metal in his arm is a bit more trickier!!!

Thoughts please!!!

It really depends. I have metal in my jaw and have come to expect the alarm. However it depends on the airport and sometimes nothing happens. Last year when it went off as I walked through in Manchester the security lady was quick to jump in and tell me not to worry, it was a random check that came up every xxx no. of times someone passed through the screening area.

Now my bit of metal may have nothing to do with the alarms, but I just assume it sometimes may trigger it.

The braces won't be a problem. And I never used to remove my wedding rings. The flesh in the arm also has more muscle and flesh covering it so it is less likely to be a problem.

At the end of the day, plenty folk have been in accidents or for some reason have some sort of metal. If it was a problem there would have been a way around it to avoid delays. I don't think it will be a problem. Where are you flying from? If I was going through one of the airports with the "naked scanners" this year, i would actually volunteer quite readily to use it as I think this would potentially make things easier by way of explanation.

DF has pegs in his ankle he has a doctors note but he just shows his scar and says that is where it is etc they say that is good enough.

Hope that is some help my braces never set off the secuirty alarm before when I had them never even thought about it before lol

Even if you do set the alarms off, as we all have done at somepoint, you just get the rubdown.

If he says "oh it's probably the plate in my arm" and they give him a pat down that'll be it over.

I used to get quite nervous of airport security, but they are doing a good job, and you are just one of thousands of people they see in a day, so I stopped letting it feel personal if they did open my bag, or if I beeped and now it's fine. I don't know why but I just used to dread the alarm going off.

I would like a go of the naked scanner too.

My son has Metal Plates in his arm and so far has never had a problem at any airport

Oh I don't know if Gatwick has one yet. I know Manchester does, but I haven't kept up to date with it since it is no longer in the headlines. People were most indignant when it was announced ..... There was a thread late last year on these boards about it. I will see if I can find it and post the link.

I had braces until I was about 16 and never set off any of the alarms in the airport.

DH got a new knee at the end of January. At every security check on our visit at Easter the alarms went off. He was taken aside, explained he had a new knee, was given a closer check with an extra sensitive 'wand' which sang out beautifully every time it was waved over his knee and was then allowed to go through. A minor inconvenience in order to ensure greater safety for us all. Although we were separated, he was only ever a few paces away and I was able to stand and wait the couple of minutes until he had been through the extra check. I'm sure everything will be fine. Heading back on the 29th so we'll see how often he gets pulled aside then.
