My dd dances and ice skates but not competitively. This is the first year she wears a bra. She is smaller than an A cup but not completely flat either. She basically wears a sports bra.

This spring she has two ice skating recitals and a dance recital coming up. We don't have the costumes yet but from the pictures they all seem to have thin spaghetti type straps. The fabric on the costumes tends to be clingy. I have never seen a strapless bra in her size nor have I found one with clear straps.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a bra to go with costumes for rehearsals/recitals? I'm trying to keep it relatively cheap since it may just get worn 6 times. Thanks

This may sound really odd...but from experience, but I had similar issues with DD.

Go to a bridal store that sells undergarments. They will have "proper" undergarments in just about every size for just about. One thing that was needed for one of her dresses - the bridal store "sewed" in cups on one of DD's dresses. (In case you are wondering, DD was also a size A at at that time.)

Many, Many moons ago I used to dance, and I have a couple other tips.

While I agree with PP about where to get the bra that's strapless, you will pay a lot of money for it. You can try a high end place like macys or fredericks as well you might find one there for less as they sometimes have really good sales.

If the costume is white you need a white bra otherwise light colors you need a flesh colored or black bra for dark colors. The reason for this - under the harsh stage lights the bra WILL show so you want it to blend as best as possible. Your photos and your DD will thank you for doing this - trust me on this one. :rolleyes1

do you have a dance store near you? I buy all my dd16 (she is a dancer) undergarments from the dance store.

My DD is in the same situation. She dances and twirls baton. Her baton cosutme is an asymetrical top. The side without a wide shoulder strap is held up with essentially a bra strap. She wears what is basically a sports bra but with "regular" bra straps. We are able to pin the two straps together so there is just one strap visible. Her bra came from Justice.

When I was younger, I had a strapless bra that was essentially just a stretchy material. I think we got them at jcpennys or target. They had to have been pretty cheap too, because I believe my mom bought them for my sister and I for a vacation one year (before moving up to an actual strapless bra!).

All the "tween"ish girls on DD's dance team wear a body suit. No bra necessary, and the straps are clear (meaning they do not show on stage). The body suit is flesh colored. This is the one that DD has, but there are others:

These are the ones recommended by the owner of the studio. Even some of the older girls wear them without bras. There is decent support.

The problem with a bra and costumes is that they often don't fit the cut of the costume and will show in places you don't expect. A bra that isn't 110% properly fit will also "show" (think pantylines). We don't allow any type of undergarment that isn't considered part of the costume, as it *will* show.

There is a good chance that the costumes will have built in support. You can also get a nude leo for your daughter to wear under costumes--look for one with spaghetti straps or clear straps.

Honestly, at a size A, support should not be an issue. A couple of band-aids will serve her just as well and with much less hassle.;)

FWIW- I work for a professional ballet company and school; my daughter is in her 11th year of dance--this is something of which I have actual knowledge. LOL- that is a rare enough event!

Hope that helps-

I was thinking the same thing...it's rare that I actually know the answer to one, and this is one I did. :goodvibes The nude leotard (aka bodysuit) is definitely the way to go. My DD loves it because it's comfortable, and makes quick changing between dances easy...as well as modest. She's at that age where she didn't like to be nekkid (as she was before the bodysuit) in front of other people.

If you're worried about her chest appearing less than decent, I would recommend buying breast daisies. They're inexpensive and cover the most important part.

Honestly, if she's less than an A-cup, her costume will probably look better without an undergarment. Recital-wear tend to be the thin material that clings to your body.

And like mnrose and balletmom, I'm also surprised I have advice to give! I danced ballet from I was 10-15, so I know something about "developing" while doing dance

At my DD dance studio, once they are in 3rd grade they are required to wear a 'body stocking' which basically is a flesh colored leotard that has adjustable clear straps...as underwear and bra is NOT permitted this gives them a base under the costume for modesty and it also gives them somewhere to safety pin straps, pants, skirts etc so that they are not tugging at costume parts during their dances.
Here is the first picture of an example that I was able to google:

Since she doesn't need any support, I'm assuming you're worried about the see thru issue. Target sells the stick on type things that were mentioned above. DD wore them with her skimpy costumes before she developed into needing a bra.

For dance recitals at that size, it is more about concealing and comfort. I actually found the only thing that did not show through and molded...at WALMART. Maybe $5

It was on the starter rack. but in nude color. Not an athletic, more a tube with straps, clear and matching. not to costly either.
With the nude color, it blends very nice and left no line marks.

But I think they have fertilizer, three years later she is a 32 B. Must take after me, that was the size of my first bra at 13.
