Boy Scout Troop Meeting Help

Our Boy Scout troop consists of about 18 boys (less durring football season!) ages of 6th thru 12th grades.

We are looking for simple things to keep them busy while everyone else is getting there. Currently it just seems to be chaos.

I have used puzzle things like "name three words that are spelled the same frontwards and backwards". ( Level, Racecar,
Kayak, Etc.)

Basically something fun to keep them busy while not exactally supervised. Many parents have questions, etc, that keep Scoutmaster Hubby busy and it needs to be something that the Patrol leaders keep them occupied. I don't want ot end with worksheets or something like school, and space at some meetings are limited, especially with winter coming where outside is not really an option.

Any ideas?

We have the scouts practice knots before each meeting and have the 1st class and above scouts help teach the younger scouts 1 certain knot each week. We also use the time for getting scout books signed off by the older scouts to help the younger scout rank advance.. There is always a meal planning group working on the meal plan for the next campout...

geffric's ideas are good ones. When my son was SPL (Senior Patrol Leader) he gave each Scout a piece of rope. Every week they learned a new knot - when they arrived at the meeting, they executed the knot they had learned the prior week to either the SPL or ASPL.

My son has have 3 Patrols in his Troop - each Patrol takes a turn of arriv ing early and setting up the flags, chairs, etc. for the meeting. They also clean-up afterwards.

Your SPL and ASPL should be in charge of the meetings and arranging for activities for the Scouts.

Oh Darn! I would have been able to ask my husband (asst. Scoutmaster) and Son but they just left 5 minutes ago for a weekend campout.
I will ask them when they get home.
