Boxing up Food

I actually brought a ziploc in my bag, as my son when we were there last, would only eat about half his lunch and then about 30 minutes later be hungry. Pizza or nuggets are easy to sit down somewhere and have as a snack. Worked for us. As everyone says to each their own.

I think it is awful to see people walk around with boxes of food in the parks.

My question is:

What do people do with the food? If you are on Disney property and not in a 1 or 2 bed villa, where are you keeping it? Do you take it to the food court the next day to reheat.

I would love restaurants on Disney property to stop this.

Maybe what you are seeing are people who are in the process of leaving the parks and have their food with them. Or whatever they have in the containers can be kept for a while without spoiling. If I have leftovers and am staying at a place without a refrigerator, I always have a cooler which is just fine for keeping leftovers. I also always travel with zipper bags so problem there. And with a lot of leftovers, you don't need to reheat anything, you just eat it cold or room temperature. If I do have leftovers after eating, I always think about how to get it back to the room and what I can do with it later. If I can't accommodate it, I don't take it with me.

Disney will never stop this practice as the meal in front of you is the one you've paid for. They aren't going to say you have to throw out any of it because, well, it's yours once it's put in front of you. You bought it so you should be able to do whatever you want to with it.

I'm really not trying to attack you, but I have a question. Are you aware that some people pack food when they come to the parks and, therefore, are walking about with food ALL day? Does that bother you?

Again, not attacking, just legitimately curious.

I have a thing about wasting food. I don't like eating contests, or when kids use food for crafts. There are too many people starving in our backyard to waste food, I find it disrespectful. Too many restaurants serve very large portions, it would be unhealthy to eat all of it. I think that it is reasonable to wrap up leftovers. BTW, I don't understand people that eat at Pizza Hut, gross! To each their own...

I didn't see the thing about Dr. Oz but as a lifetimer of Weight Watchers I can tell you that one of the hints that are taught is to get a doggie bag as soon as you get your meal. Cut your portion in half and take it home. Then eat what you feel comfortable eating out of what is left.
Just because you bring it home with you now doesn' mean you will eat it in an hour... it might be a meal for the next day.

And I agree... I don't think you can tell people they can't bring food in doggie bags when they have paid for it.

I don't know how you would know they are walking around with food. The only time I can remember getting a 'doggie bag' my son was back at the room not feeling well and I brought him 1/2 of my sandwich from the Plaza. It was placed in a Disney bag just like you would get at any shop. BTW-we went right to our room at the Poly.

I don't think we have even been offered doggie bags at WDW. If we have wanted them (rarely) we have had to ask for them. We usually aren't going straight back to the room and I worry about the temperature of food being ok. The only things I remember taking were on occasion my kids wanting to bring back leftover bread from the basket or a dessert we were too full to enjoy at the meal. Most of the reaturants we choose at WDW and at home seem to offer boxes only upon request except pizza places.

My dd usually goofs off till her food is cold anyway so yes, not just at WDW but other parks as well I will get her food (if its finger food) in a carry out so that she can finish it later. Again if it is something that would spoil I wouldn't carry around food but I definitely plan to get some desserts boxed when we go. At home if we do have dessert, its usually at least an hour after dinner. Even on holidays I will clear the table, load the dishwasher, and then wait for coffee to brew before I serve dessert. I love the DDP but just can't eat dessert after finishing a full meal.

Would you prefer they throw it out? You do realize there are starving people in the world right? People get irked at the weirdest things on these boards. Oh, and Pizza Hut  I'd rather eat cardboard.

Too many to quote, apologies.

I think this is a cultural thing. I am from Ireland and travel extensively in Europe and UK. This is something that is very rarely done.
I understand the point on wasted food, but that is an issue of portion control. If I can't eat it on the plate, it gets left.

I was curious to general feelings on this subject and I posted a similar comment on a UK website and the responses are polar opposites.

I accept that it is a standard thing in American Restaurants and it is not in Europe.

Thank you all who contributed.

I'm from the UK and I don't think it's weird :confused3 I've taken away a dessert in a box before when I was too full to eat it at the time.

I'm from Austria and here we are offered doggy bags all the time . A few weeks ago we visited one of the most expensive restaurants in Vienna and even there they ofefred us a doggy bag for my daughter's schnitzel. Same happens regularly in Germany and even in Italy here I lived for a while I could have taken my leftover pizzas.
But there are too many different cultures here, so there aren't many things that happen or don't happen all over Europe. So it may be possible that there are no doggie bags in Ireland but in many other European countries.

We have only taken leftovers at Il Mulino and it was pizza. We were staying at the Dolphin and my husband ate it for breakfast the next day

Honestly I dont think the portions are large enough for to go boxes and I have never seen anyone carrying food around with them unless it is CS stuff.

I'm from England and we're offered doggie bags all the time and, if not, they're more than happy to do so if we ask :confused3

Having never traveled to Europe I have learned something today. It always amazes me of differences even within the borders of US when traveling from state to state

Some of the boxes you may be seeing may not even be leftovers. Lots of people stop at the bakery in France at Epcot and get a box of pasteries to bring back to their rooms.

European portions are decidely smaller than American portions, more courses perhaps but much smaller.

Here, if the food is tasty and there is enough left for an adequate serving, we ask for a box. Every room practically has a fridge and a microwave, nothing like late night leftovers, then again my son (14) prefers leftovers to typical breakfast food!

I also don't understand why it would bothers OP to see people carrying their leftovers around the parks. Unless they are opening them up & eating during a show or something, how does a guest carrying leftovers affect anyone else?

I agree - don't get why the OP is so bothered by this. There are so many other things that people do that are downright rude -- why on earth would it bother you if someone takes food (that they have paid for!) back to their room?

Personally, I find that many restaurant meals are much too big to finish. In fact, I had a really good stir-fry dish at a local teriyaki place today for lunch, which was easily big enough for two meals. Had them box up the leftovers, and will eat it for lunch tomorrow. To me, it's just common sense. OP, why would this offend you? Do you consider it tacky?
