OH, OH, OH...these are one of my favorites. I remember them fondly when we lived on St Croix...such beautiful plants.
I have one that I bring in every winter....it's white and hasnt bloomed since the year I brought it home,...it has been trained into a 6 foot tree shape.
Oh, I love these too! They remind me of our trips to Hawaii, back in the 80's. They were everywhere, there! I saw several in Florida recently, a gorgeous deep fuscia colour, and wished I could have one up here in Ontario. I wonder if I could do as you do Amid, I'll have to look into it.
They aren't blooming here at all. They were frost-bitten last January but have come back. Strange because a huge one we had in California never did come back after a freeze. However one tiny one that I put in the entrance and never did water and completely died has come back with a vengeance and that one is blooming a little. They are in all colors at the garden shops. Just amazing. They actually are not flowers - what the color is is leaf bracts - like pointsettas. Sometimes there is a tiny white flower in the center of the color bract.
Yes I know about the leaves being THE flower! That is sooo neat! We have Fuscia, Purple, Orange, and I have seen the white, but very rare here! Driving to the Keys you see them EVERYWHERE!
