Both night time shows?

Is it possible to view the first Hogwarts projection evening show (our first time seeing it) then immediately take the HWE (using the express pass) back to USO then get in a decent position for the Cinematic Celebration show?

Absolutely! We did just that on our last trip in August - even got in a bunch of rides on Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff while everyone else was congregating for the lights show! If there is a big line at HWE, you can still make it by going through Citywalk - just stick to the "inside" (head towards Toothsome) part of the path to save a bit of walking.
