borrowing/use year question

Hi,

I have an October use year and I booked a trip this October for 3 nights in a studio at OKW. I borrowed points from my next year to do this. My question is: are these borrowed points now in my Oct '02 - Sept '03 year - or are the points in this year thru October '02? (Do use years begin on the 1st day of the month of your use year or not?)

I'm thinking of cancelling one of the nights in the studio and stay at the Poly on cash for a couple days prior and if the points will go into holding or expire at the end of this October, I won't cancel...

Does that make sense?

October use year points run October 1 to September 30. So if you borrowed 2003 points for an October 2002 trip, they willn't expire until September 30, 2003.

Thank you!

I thought that was it - something MS said when I made the reservationb made me think that wasn't the case....

I'm a little confused about which year are the borrowed points. This could be where the confusion with what MS said comes in.

You have October 2001 points that are good until September 30, 2002.

You get more points on October 1, 2002 that are good until September 30, 2003.

On October 1, 2003 you get an additional allotment.

If you are taking a trip in October 2002, you could be using points you get 10/1, points that you might have banked forward and/or points that you borrow from the 2003 allotment.

From your post, I think you haven't banked any points. You are using your 2002 allotment and some from your 2003 allotment. If you cancel the October trip, you would be able to use or bank your 2002-2003 points. Any points that you borrowed from 2003-2004 cannot be banked and would have to be used by September 30, 2003.

Keep in mind that use year is not the same as calendar year. In your case, an October UY is almost a year later than it's equivalent calendar year.

Calendar 2002 goes Jan, 1 2002 - Dec 31, 2002

October UY 2002 goes Oct 1, 2002 to Sep 30, 2003

Points you receive every Oct 1st are good for the next 12 months. I always like to make a little chart. For October UY your's would look like this:

2001 Oct 1, 2001 thru Sep 30, 2002
2002 Oct 1, 2002 thru Sep 30, 2003
2003 Oct 1, 2003 thru Sep 30, 2004
2004 Oct 1, 2004 thru Sep 30, 2005

You may bank from any one year into the following year, or you may borrow from any year into it's previous year.

Since you said you borrowed points for your October ressie, I assume they were from your 2003 use year since your 2002 use year would already give you the points for an October 2002 vacation without borrowing.

Keep in mind that all use year dates are totally independent of any date that you may call to MAKE the reservation. Use year only comes into play for when the vacation will actually be taken.

Now if by chance you made the ressie during calendar 2001 (November, or December) or sometime earlier this calendar year 2002, you may have actually made a reservation using your 2002 use year points, which you really did not 'borrow', but got the impression you did because of the date you were calling.

Just to be sure, you can simply call MS and ask what use year those points are assigned to. In any case, whether they're 2002 regular points or 2003 borrowed points, you have until Sep 30, 2003 to use them.

If they had been 2001 points, then you would have had to have banked them to make an October 2002 reservation as October is in your 2002 use year and any 2001 points would expire on Sep 30,2002.

No - I never have points to bank! I have been in a constant "borrowing" mode since joining over a year ago...

I just made the reservation in May and had used up all my available points for a December reservation prior to that so I borrowed from 2003-04 uy. MS must have been talking about if I cancelled within the 30 days - but the way he said it made it sound like if I cancelled at any time - and I didn't think I'd be cancelling anything so it didn't matter. (I am now contemplating prolonging our Fri-Sat Poly stay to Sunday since we're going to MNSSHP and the thought of jumping on the monorail at midnight to get to sleep is very tempting...)

Thanks for clearing up my confusion!

Kristen
