Borrowing Question

I should know this, we've been doing it for quite a while, but we usually end up banking and not borrowing (so I will use that as my excuse..)

We currently have 12 points left for our 2011 use year after planning a family trip for this summer. I am considering extending on a few more days, and if we did this we may have to borrow some points from 2012. However, I have hesitated to book it that way because the plans could change and we may have to drop one day off sometime between now 31 days before our arrival date.

My question is this. If I have to drop the first day (or last day) of our reservation, would we lose those borrowed points? We won't be able to go again this year. If I need to drop one day will MS automatically return the cancelled night's points as 2011 use year points so I can bank them. Or will they automatically put the 2012 borrowed points back in our pot which would effectively prohibit me from banking them (and possibly losing them.)

Like I said, I should know the answer to this, but don't, and was hoping someone may have had this situation happen to them before.

I'm actually a little confused by your post, but I wasn't trying too hard. :goodvibes

Banking & borrowing are final transactions. Once you do that, the points stay in the year into which your borrowed (or banked) them if you cancel and have to be used by that year's end - they can't be banked or borrowed again.

But if you are also using current year points for a reservation and then need to cancel part - you can request that those current year points be returned to your current use year instead of the borrowed ones. Then, you would be able to bank those into the following year.

Yes, that was actually what I meant, in my long winded post. We wouldn't be needing to cancel the entire reservation, only one day (possibly.) So, in a nutshell, my question is, when I cancel a part of a reservation that contains both 2011 and 2012 points, I can ask MS to return our 2011 points to our account, and keep the 2012 points applied? I hope that makes more sense.. It's been a long day...

I also have a question that I can't seem to get a straight answer from DVC from: If we want to transfer points, can transfers only be made once every calendar year or use year? And can we transfers points for our next use year before that year starts? Am I correct in understanding that banked points can't be transferred? But, can they be rented out and have to be used by the end of the next use year?

Good questions; I am also interested in the calendar year or use year part of the question.

I'm not sure on the calendar/use year transferring question. I've seen that talked about quite a bit, but never pay that much attention.

On the other - OP -

if you have a trip that uses 2011 and 2012 points and the trip is in your 2011 use year, that means the 2012 points have been borrowed into 2011. If you have to cancel part of it, you want to tell them to return your 2011 points to your account, but to keep the borrowed 2012 points for the reservation. That way you can still bank the 2011 points IF you are not past the banking window (4 months prior to the end of your use year).

Which is what you said - so I'm just confirming. But watch out for your banking deadline.

you could bank if your still in your banking window.:goodvibes

Thanks. Our use year is March (so we won't even have our 2011 points until tomorrow! ;) ) So based on that fact, we'd have plenty of time to bank the 2011 points if I had to cancel one day since the trip is in mid-July.

Thanks. I thought I'd read here that you can tell MS which type of points to return to your account when you change a reservation with mixed year points, but I wasn't sure.

Here is how I understand transfers. It is one transdfer, in or out per UY. You can transfer points from the current UY and the next UY.

For example, I am in my June 2010 UY right now. I could transfer 2010 UY points and that would count as my 2010 UY transfer. I can also tranfer my2011 UY points and that would count as my 2011 UY transfer. Once I enter my 2011 UY, I could then transfer 2011 UY (if I haven't done it yet) and 2012 UY.

Tranferred points retain their home resort and UY. You can not transfer points once they have been banked. However, if you receive transferred points, you can then bank them.

Once you receive a transfer, the points are yours to do with what you want. If you want to use them to book a reservation to rent to someone else, you can.
