If points are borrowed from the next use year to secure a reservation, but that particular reservation is cancelled, do the borrowed points remain in the use year they were moved to or are they returned to the original year?

Does the timing of the cancellation have an impact on this process?

My thought was to borrow points to secure a reservation, and if it is cancelled (and I'll know this at least 6 months in advance) I'd either:

1. return borrowed points to the original use year
OR
2. Keep the borrowed points in the current use year (if they are not allowed to be returned) and supplement the next use year by banking current points equal to those originally borrowed.

Can anyone help clarify this? Thanks in advance.

Borrowed points remain in the UY that the reservation was in.

I just logged into my DVC account and looked it up:

# If you have not completed travel on borrowed Vacation Points by the end of the Use Year they've been borrowed into, they will expire.
# You cannot return borrowed Vacation Points to their original Use Year.
# You cannot bank or transfer borrowed Vacation Points.

# All borrowing transactions are final.

So the borrowed points can't go back into their original year, if you cancel the trip.

So it sounds like plan 2, of the ideas you listed, will be what you would to do if the trip is canceled; bank current UY points into the next year to balance it out.

i bolded the correct part above. banking and borrowing are both final transactions, so make sure you really want to do it...

nope. but if you cancel 31 or more days out, you might still be able to bank your current points and your borrowed pts can still be used to book through the end of that use year - if you cancel later than that, all the points for the reservation turn into "holding pts" and can only be used within 60 days...which is tougher.

this is an option if you cancel 1) 31 or more days out AND 2) before your banking window closes. (this is why it's good to travel early in your use year, BTW.)

Thanks for the information.

Based on reading all of the literature, I figured this was the answer but wanted to see if anyone had any veteran tricks or tips.

I had a similar question: Do you have to formally borrow the points to make the reservation? So, if I have 100 points banked from 2009 and I get 100 points for 2010 and have a reservation in the Fall 2010 for 200 points and I am considering a trip at the end of the year (holiday season) for 100 points. Can I reserve the room in holiday seasion or do I have to formally 'borrow' my points first then I can reserve. Then if I decide I am not going in December, I am in the same boat as the OP? What if I cancel the Fall trip? I assume all my 200 points would come back and I could use 100 in December and bank the other 100 for 2011?

Actually, borrowing only happens when you go to make the reservation if points are needed to complete the reservation.

So, if you have 200 points and make a September 2010 vacation and then want to book another vacation in December 2010 for 100 points, you would have to borrow them from your 2011 UY to complete that reservation.

If you then cancel that reservation, all those borrowed points would remain in your 2010 UY and would need to be used by the end of that UY.

If you cancel the September trip at least 31 days in advance, all those points would go back into your account as the same as they were. The 100 banked 2009 points would still need to be used by the end of the 2010 UY. However, the 100 2010 points would still be bankable as long as you are still in the banking window.

I would not suggest borrowing points for a reservation unless you know that you are pretty sure you want to go.
