Just want to see if I have this right.

If I borrow points and then cancel, the points cannot be banked, but must be used in their UY?

So, I'm planning a trip in Jan. 07. IMy UY is March. I'll need to borrow points for a 2BR from my 07 UY (which would normally be available on March 1).

If, for some reason, I have to cancel the Jan. trip (or only need a smaller unit - therefore not as many points), would the borrowed points revert to their normal 07 UY (and have to be used by Feb. 08)? Or would I have to use them by the end of my current UY (Feb. 07)?

Thanks!
Terri

Borrowed points end with use year they are borrowed into, so they would end in February '07.

A cancellation would make the points a use them or lose them scenerio. But on the other hand if your ressie changes you can use your borrowed points first and then use the current UY points....anything left over can be banked.

That doesn't work in this case, because both will end within the month after the canceld ressie.

When you borrow points they cannot be put back in their original UY so any borrowed points freed up by canceling or "downsizing" your reservation would have to be used by the end of Feb '07. You would have to use those points for something yourself or rent them or transfer them to another member.

As far as your current UY points, your options depend on exactly when you cancel/change your reservation.

1. You change the reservation prior to Dec 31, 2006 and at least 31 days prior to your check-in date: You would be within your 25% banking window so if you had not banked any other points this UY, then up to 25% of your annual allotment could be banked. This won't cover all of your points if you cancel the reservation, but will help save some of your points. If you change the reservation rather than cancel it, make sure only current UY points are freed up and that all banked points are still being used for the reservation. Then bank as many of those freed up points as you can within your 25% limit.

2. You change the reservation prior to Dec 31, 2006 but are within 30 days of check-in: Any points freed up by changing/canceling go into "holding" status (points in "holding" can only be used to make reservations within 60 days of check-in). According to the DVC handbook, you cannot bank these points but some people have posted that MS might let you bank them but they would still maintain their "holding" status. I wouldn't want to count on being able to bank them, however.

And another thing to be aware of: once you are within 60 days of the end of your UY, the "60-day rule" would kick in, limiting what you could do with any of these points, whether they are current UY or borrowed points. You could not use the points for the Disney Collection, Concierge Collection, or Adventurer Collection options because you cannot both book and travel within the last 60 days of your UY using those options.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies. They were very helpful.
