I am a new member and still a bit confused regarding banking, borrowing.

I currently have a reservation for Oct 09 using 68 pts, my use year is February and I own 160pts.

I am going to make a reservation for Jan 10, that will use 178pts. 92 pts from this use year and borrowing 86 from next year. If I had to cancel the reservation for Jan 10 by the end of Sept (my deadline for banking) would I lose the borrowed points? That is once I borrow them into this use year can I return them to next use year if I cancel.

Hopefully this came out clearer than it is in my head!!!

Borrowing can't be undone BUT you could bank your unused 2009 points if need be, subject to normal banking rules.

In your example after you borrow the 86 they will expire Jan. 31st 2010 and can NOT be banked, but your 92 points from the 2009 UY COULD be banked into your 2010 use year IF you do that before the end of September. Come Oct. 1st all 178 points become use it or loose it before your '09 UY ends.

Hoep that helps!

just to repeat how risky it can be to make a january reservation with a feb UY: after oct 1 of the prior year, not only will your borrowed pts expire on jan 31...so will your current year pts.

if you travel in the last 3 months or so of your use year, cancellations can be really, really bad news.

That's why, contrary to what many will tell you, UY and your vacation dates do matter.

I'm got a situation kind of on the same lines. Being new, I think I made a mistake.

I was not sure which week we would be able to go so I booked the following:

My use year is March.

I have 1st week in November using my 2009 points.

I then have the next week in November borrowing my 2010 points.

I now know I can use the first week that is my 2009 points.

What choices do I have if I cancel the week that's my 2010 points.

I realize now that I should've used my borrowed points for the week that I felt was pretty certain. Then I could've banked my 2009 points. Or at least I think that's right. Very confusing!! I wish I could get MS to switch the points on the reservations.

I wish I could get MS to switch the points on the reservations.

I've heard rumors that this has been done in some cases; did you ask them about it? Then you should be able to bank the 2009 points...

I had also heard that but haven't tried yet. I had thought about renting out the Thanksgiving week but I'm not sure I'd want to be in a borrowing position every year since we plan on going every year.

If you have a vacation with borrowed points and cancel, those points will have to be used before the end of the UY they were borrowed in to..

If you have to cancel Jan 2010 vacation before your banking deadline, you can still bank the 2009 points being used. You can then ask MS to do a "points reallocation" for that Oct 2009 trip. You can ask them to sort of "swap" out the 68 2009 points for 68 of the 2010 borrowed points and then bank the 68 2009 points.

While its not going to be an even swap (since you will have 86 borrowed), it could limit your potential loss of points to only 18.

Of course, if you end up having to cancel after the banking deadline, then all of your points will have to be used by January 31st.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the responses....I think we will wait and book the reservation in September when we are sure. Hopefully we will still get something at 4 months, we are fine with Saratoga or OKW.
