Borrowing Points Question

Thank you in advance! We have a December use year or 80 points. I banked 28 points into my 2020 points for a total of 108. My question: when can I borrow points from 2021? We are planning a trip next November 2020. Is it foolish to think the earliest time could be January 1st?

A Nov 2020 trip will fall in your Dec 2019 UY. You would not be able to borrow from Dec 2021 for that trip. The earliest trip you could use Dec 2021 points would be a Dec 2020 trip.

You can borrow from one year ahead, bank to one year later. A Dec UY can be tricky because everyone else is thinking about the new year and your UY just started Dec 1.

It sounds like your best bet is to move your trip back a month to December 2020 - Then you can use the points you have banked, the 2020 points, and borrow points from the 2021 use year if necessary. That’s all possible as of Dec 1, 2020 for a Dec UY.

Or if your trip crosses the UY (Dec 1), you could book some nights with your banked and current points and then made a second reservation for the 2020 UY with 2020 points and borrowed 2021 points. When a trip crosses over the UY, you must have two reservations, one for the nights in the first UY and one for the nights in the second UY.

As noted, you cannot possibly use Dec 2021 points for a Nov 2020 trip. Moreover, you cannot now use those 20 Dec 2019 points for a Nov 2020 trip because you have banked them into Dec 2020 use year and they cannot be returned to the Dec 2019 use year. The only points you can use for that Nov 2020 trip are Dec 2020 points by borrowing them into the Dec 2019 use year.

As far as actually making a reservation, you can always book your home resort at 11 months out from arrival date. For example, you could book that Nov 2020 trip right now on Dec 26, 2019, and borrow the Dec 2020 points to do it, if the time you want to arrive in Nov 2020 is Nov 26 or earlier.

Note, I am assuming you do not mean that what you actually did was bank points from your Dec 2018 use year into your Dec 2019 use year so that both sets could be used in Nov 2020, and actually want to borrow Dec 2020 points. If that were the case you could use all three sets of points and make the Nov reservation right now if arrival date is on or before Nov 26, 2020.
