I'm trying to understand when you can borrow points...

If I have a June 2007 use year (170 pts), when can I borrow June 2008 use year points into June 2007? Do I have to wait until we are in June 2007, or can I borrow the 2008 points into 2007 anytime?

The reason I ask is that I am hoping to make a ressie for early December of 2008 at the 7 month mark, and I'll only have enough points if I borrow 2008 points into the 2007 UY... Does that make sense?

Who knew managing points was rocket science?

Thanks!

Hi Lisa:

You can borrow points when you are booking a reservation in your current use year (even if you haven't started that use year yet).*

With a June UY, your points lives are from June 1 until May 31 the following year. Thus any reservation made in December 2008 will fall in the middle of your June 2007 UY. Once you are at the 11 month mark for your home resort, or 7 month mark for all others, you can book that specific reservation using your 'current' UY 2007 points, Borrowed 2008 UY points or Banked 2006 UY points.

Assumming a December 1, 2008 vacation. January 1st 2007 you may book the first night (December 1st, 2008). Even though you are still in your 2007 UY, you may borrow UY 2008 Points.

* This is a complex example feel free to ignore it.
Suppose I have an April UY. I am currently in my 2006 UY. I wish to book a stay for April 2007 (the start of my 2007 UY), but I have already borrowed all of my 2007 points. I can now borrow my UY 2008 points and make the reservation for 2007, even though I am still in my 2006 UY! Or if I had any 2006 points left I could bank them subject to banking rules.

Too much fun, eh?

If you are looking for a Dec 2008 reservation, you don't need to borrow the 2008 points, but you need to BANK your 2007 points.

The June 2007 points are "good" from June 1 '07 to May 31 '08. To use them for a Dec '08 trip you need to bank them, effectively making them 2008 points. These 170 plus your 'normal' 2008 points (170) will give you 340 to use by May 31 of 2009.

You do NOT have to have the points in your account when you book, only when you will be traveling.

Hope this helps.

Unlike banking which you can do at any time during your banking windows, you can only borrow points when you are actually making a reservation that will use those points. You want to book a Dec '08 trip at the 7-month window, so you will call MS to make the reservation sometime in May '08. That Dec '08 trip falls within your 2008 Use Year so you can use 2008 points for that trip. If you need to borrow additional points, you can borrow from your 2009 Use Year at the time you make the reservation. (You can also use any banked '07 points in your account for that trip and would want to use those up first.)

If you really meant Dec '07 instead of Dec '08, then your 7-month window will start sometime in May '07. A Dec '07 trip falls within your 2007 Use Year, so you can use banked '06 points, '07 points, and if you need them, you can borrow from your 2008 points at the time you make the reservation.

Hope this helps!

Thank you! I actually did mean to say December 2007... but I completely understand how this works. Thanks for taking the time to explain... and give examples! :teacher:
