Borrowing points from future

I've heard of people saying they do a big trip every other year etc. Do you have to wait a year or are you borrowing against future years? If you are borrowing against the future, how far in advance can you borrow, just the next year? What are the limitations?

You can have up to three years worth of points available with a little planning.

You can "bank" this years points and then make a reservation for next year borrowoing the following years points.

You can only bank for one year and only borrow from one year ahead. Using banking AND borrowing, you can have three years worth of points available for a vacation.

Ok Richyams, help me out on this one- you are the point "expert"!lol.
I am planning next April 2002 trip to BWV and Vero Beach. I have 132 2001 points left (Dec.use year, so they actually haven't been "issued" yet) then 150 2002 points, but I need 342 points for the trip I want to take, so...... that leaves me short 60 points. Can I borrow these from 2003? and when can I do that? I plan on making my BWV ressies in May at the 7 month window, but can't make Vero until September. Help!! Cash nights are a possibility and so are renting someone elses points, but I'd rather use my own. Thanks in advance! <IMG SRC="/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif" alt="confused">

Use year and banking and borrowing has nothing at all to do with when you can make a reservation.

You make a reservation according to the 7-11 month rules.

When you make a reservation and when the reservation is has nothing at all to do with when you can bank and borrow.

You bank and borrow according to the banking and borrowing rules.

You need to bank those 132 points whenever you can, you will then make the reservation according to the 7-11 month rules, when making that reservation, MS will borrow the points from the '03 use year.

This is all considering that you are still within the banking window of the '01 points(obviously, you are) and that the reservation is during the '02 use year.

macnjac- It sounds as though you have already borrowed 18 points from your Dec 2001 Use Year and your planned trip to BWV/VB is in April 2002 (which falls within your Dec 2001 Use Year also.)

You will not need to bank the 132 points- you may just use those for the April ressie and you may borrow all 150 points from your Dec. 2002 Use Year- but you can't borrow from 2003.

For the other 6- points, you may need to find a cash reservation or rent those points from another owner. Good Luck! (....an add-on may also be a worthwhile consideration!)

With a December use year, I don't think you can borrow 2003 points for an April 2002 trip. Your trip would be in your December 2001 use year (12/1/01 to 11/30/02), not 2002. So for an April 2002 trip, you can use banked points from Dec 2000 (if any left), current year Dec 2001 and borrowed points from Dec 2002.

I didn't even look at your dates to figure what use year your vacation is in. That is why I said:

What I am mostly trying to make you aware of is that banking and borrowing time periods are completely independent of when you can make a reservation.

The only thing that matters for when you make a reservation is the 7-11 month rules.

The only thing that matters for when you can bank and borrow is the banking and borrowing rules.

As DOC pointed out, it looks like your reservation is during your '01 use year. You can only borrow '02 points.
