Borrowing Points Each Year?

Our modest 2014 trip in a studio has turned into a 2-bedroom extravaganza as a special birthday celebration for a family member. In order to cover the larger accommodations, we're borrowing 80 points from our 2015 allotment.

The problem is we planned on using all our 2015 points for a trip to Aulani. So if we keep plans the same, we'll then need to borrow from 2016.

This got me thinking - is there a limit to borrowing points year after year? Can you theoretically borrow until your allotment runs dry?

Yes, you may borrow from the Use Year following the dates of your reservation as long as you still have points remaining in that Use Year. You can also purchase up to 24 One-Time-Use-Points from MS (@ $15 each) to complete a reservation made within 7 months of arrival.

Otherwise, your options are to find another member willing to transfer some of their points into your account (the Rent/Trade Board here is a good place to try to find that member) ... OR ... consider an add-on or resale purchase. If you have points transferred into your account, they can be banked into the following Use Year - so you can even consider a transfer larger than you'd need for just this Use Year or even the next.

Good luck!

Or you can just not go. Or let family members just make their own reservations.

Yes, of course we can but where is the fun in that? :)

Well, if family members make their own reservations, you get your points to use for you. And if you don't go, it just is better the next time you do go. Lemonade!

There is no limit to how many times you can borrow as long as you have the points to borrow, and as said before, you can only borrow from the use year that is ahead of the use year in which your vacation dates themselves fall. You can borrow every single year you own under these circumstances. (but it sounds like there may be an add-on in your future! LOL)

We are in constant borrowing mode :), and lately, also in borrowing and renting mode. Now I am looking for a resale contract just so I can theoretically stop renting from other people to complete my reservations. Ha ha :wave2:. Who am I kidding?! I don't know if I will ever have enough points ;).

CAUTION - Constant borrowing soon becomes an add-on contract. :goodvibes

I prefer to live constantly in borrowing mode. Our intention is not to travel every year most likely every other year and borrowing the last few points from the third year help s me as it means I always use all my banked and UY points. Also we are rapidly approaching a transition phase which happens to most people eventually. Up until 2013 there were 5 of us travelling, in 2015 we will be down to 4 and after that I strongly expect us to be a groupof three so borrowing from our future allotment now is a good thing as when we go from a two bedroom to a 1 bedroom it will be harder to use all our points within our vacation time limits for a few years until the youngest finishes school. Once it is just the two of us and we are no longer tied by school we will be able to do a lot more with our points that were bought for 14-16 nights in a 2 bedroom heck we will probably be able to stay for the whole of September if we wish. Future needs are not the same as current needs so borrowing isn't always a bad thing.
