Borrowed Points Question

OK- So I am trying to understand all this points stuff and have figured out most of it but have a scenario I am not sure what would happen. Long stoory short I had originally booked a studio for next year but decided to upgrade it a 1 br because we need the extra space. To make this reservation (271 points) I had to use my 2009 points that I banked, my 2010 points and borrow 71 from 2011. We just bought in at 100 and may add on later but for now this is it. So my question is if I decide to at 7 months to move to a cheaper points 1 br (if avail. for example at BW) or if I decided to cancel 1 night of my reservation since we may drive instead of fly then what happens? I will have extra points. I know I can't bank the 2011 ones I borrowed/''; and they would have to be used by the end iof the use year. But, what about my 2010 ones? Can I bank those because I never banked them? Essentially can I use my 2009, 2011 borrowed and some of the 2010 and then bank the extra 2010 or do you have to use them in year order? If so that doesn't seem right because you can't make a reservation without borrowing and if I wait until 7 months I might not get anything. Can anyone explain what would happen in this case to me?I really appreciate everyone's help and advice since we decided to join!!

yes, you should be able to ask MS to use the borrowed pts first, so that if you are still within your banking window, you can bank those 2010 pts that were freed up.

Oh I hope so! That is the answer I wanted. I don't know if I will change or not but in case I wanted to know what would happen. Thanks!

I would call MS and ask them...I just had a similar question for them and they made it seem like they would use points in year order...ie 2009 then 10 then 11..your 2011 borrowed would stay in your 2010 use year and have to be used by 2010...I called them for the same scenario yesterday!

Oh no! See now that is the answe I don't want. Does anyone know what happens in this case or am I just out of luck as there is no way I can go in February and then again before they expire in my 2010 use year. It doesn't seem right that it would penalize me for planning ahead but I know borrowing is final. But technically I should still be able to bank my 2010 points. Could I call before I go and bank the exact # of 2010 points that I borrowed from 2011? That might work?

A couple of years ago I borrowed points to make a reservation that we then ended up cancelling. MS was able to apply the borrowed points to another reservation that we had, and then I was able to bank the original points. They didn't make it seem like an issue at all, I just had to ask them to use those borrowed points first. If nothing has changed since then you shouldn't have a problem.

Well if I decide to change it (won't even know if that is possible until at least 7 months out) then I will be sure to post what I find out! Keeping my fingers crossed just in case
