I have a Kobo, but mine is from another source. I am not quite sure about the features offered on competing brands, but here are the pros of the purchase: price; simple controls; size of screen and ability to change fonts (like this a lot); apparently Kobos can be used to read borrowed ebooks from my local library system--you would have to check with your library; ability to use large ebook store for purchases; my Kobo came loaded with 100 'free' books and has a slot for a memory chip to increase storage capacity. On the cons side of the purchase: Kobo's technical support is OK, but not terrific (I am used to Apple); Kobo's website has a really clunky search engine, at least in Canada, so looking for an ebook is best done through their affiliated brick and mortar bookstore's website, Chapters Indigo; the speed of page turning feels slow to a fast reader, and it is easy to flip forward two pages by mistake.
As to the feel of the quilted back of the Kobo--I didn't see that as a selling feature--I purchased and installed a skin on both the front and back of the Kobo, because I felt the cover would become very grubby with use.
