hey, I figure there are enough new englanders around to take a shot asking here, since the restaurant is not open and can't call them.

we were thinking about taking a ride in to cambridge today to show my visiting niece around. one stop we hoped to make was at border cafe. was just double checking the address and was looking at the menu when I saw that their kids meals are not available at the cambridge location.

???????

really?????????????

does anybody know if that is true? I mean, I know it is written right on there so most likely it is, but i guess I can't wrap my head around no kids meals at all. I am clinging to the hope that maybe they meant they just cost more than other locations or something. I have 3 young kids who don't care for tex/mex, and if there is no kids meals available, am going to have to alter my plans.

does anybody know?

Interesting; not sure about the actuality, yet, because my wife's company just moved to Cambridge and we haven't had an opportunity to visit Border Cafe there, yet. (We love the one in Burlington.)

I wonder if the Cambridge restaurant was having difficulty with Harvard students brow-beating the servers into letting them order the kids meals. ;)

it's been a few years since I've been there, but had been there many times before (with and without kids) I don't recall ever seeing a kid's menu and when I had my kids with me wasn't offered one. If your kids don't like tex-mex, I'd make other plans.

I haven't been there, but expect what someone said about college students ordering off the kids' menu is probably what happened.

However, if you really have your heart set on going, I don't think I've ever been in a restaurant that couldn't make a grilled cheese sandwich, on the menu or not. I bet they would accomodate the children in your party in order to get the adults' business.

I have been to the Border twice this week it was too hot to cook so we went to Saugus. It was funny, my DH and I were noticing what a good deal the kids meals were. NOT that we were going to ask to buy them but rather we could not believe how much food that they gave a child. There was a table of 7 kids having a birthday party and we were marveling at how inexpensivea party at the BC would be. We asked the waitress if the meals we saw were kids meals and she said " yes but only available to kids 12 and under." LOL we were just asking and by no means had any intention of getting one. So obviously , there must be a problem with adults trying to order off the kids menu.

OT I will say their house salad is the best deal on the menu.

the kids meals are one of the reasons we love going there! great deal. that and we love the food (and margaritas!) for ourselves.

we did go today. they do NOT have a kids menu, didn't give me a reason why not, although I suspect the college students trying to order is a good bet. oh, and they would NOT make a grilled cheese. they do have burgers on the menu, so one son got that but it was huge, so he just did not want it. they did say if asked they would do chicken nuggets for kids, so my other 2 split those. pretty much just popcorn chicken that I think they have for an app. I was just so surprsed that they wouldn't do the grilled cheese.

dh was just telling me he was up in saugus the other day and noticed the border cafe there was changed to the other side of route one. anyone know why they moved it?

The new on in Saugus is bigger, maybe thats why? That place is ALWAYS full! I mean even on a random weekday in the middle of the day! I imagine they must have had long waits with the smaller place. Now it is in a plaza with a Trader Joes which is nice.

There is a new place called the Fat Cactus on Rt 1 in Lynnfield that we have yet to try. We love the Border Cafe Margaritas though!

Border Cafe is in the plaza with Trader Joe's? What about Qdoba? Is that there, too? I can understand why they moved - it was hard to find, tucked in behind the Mieneke shop :teeth:

Apparently it's been a while since I've been on that part of Route 1 - is Fat Cactus the former Lucille's Chicken, formerly I forget what for a number of years, just before the underpass northbound?

Yeah it is in with the Starbucks, Trader Joes, QDoba etc. And the Fat Cactus is where Lucilles used to be, and the Naked Fish. That place has a lot of turnover! lol. It is a pain to get to, you have to go all the way down rt 1 & turn around.
