Bordatella vaccine for my dog

When we travel our dog goes to the kennel. We have always gotten him the bordatella vaccine which was good for a year. DH just had the shots updated for our trip next week and he was told by the vet that the bordatella is only good for 6 months now. I really think they are just trying to get more money out of us for another office visit and shots. They tried to tell us that he needed the rabies vaccine every year (even though it is a 3 year shot) because there is rabies in the area.

Has anyone else been told this about bordatella?

Bordatella was a once a year shot for us too...And why would you need a rabies every year if it's a 3 year vaccine? I'd call the place you board your dog and ask them AND call some other vet offices.

I just read that it should be yearly UNLESS the dog is being boarded and then it should be every 6 months

As for the rabies shot. it depends because States/municipals vary in their requirements for rabies shots. My cat get theirs every 3 years Unless I am late and then they need the to go back for the boosters. My horse gets her rabies shot yearly because that is the requirement here.

Do you have any alternatives to boarding? I only ask because you might want to do some reading about the risks of over-vaccination. We get titers done instead of vaccinating for distemper and parvo over and over again needlessly. After her puppy shots and booster our first bulldog did not need distemper again until she was 9. She never needed parvo. I never do bordatella, but then we don't board. I am not trying to push my beliefs, I just try to advise people to educate themselves. Some just haven't heard about the possible risks. I worry about a vet who is telling you to vaccinate yearly for rabies.

I have always gotten it yearly for my dogs. I just took the new puppy to the vet last week and they recommend once a year.

Unfortunately I don't have anyone to watch the dog. My mother takes care of the 3 cats but she is 84 and can't take the dog out as often as he needs to.

It is every 6 months if you are boarding them, or if you send them to doggy daycare.

It's pretty much unnecessary if your dog isn't in contact with other dogs, most vets won't even do the vaccine unless you ask for it. I only get it done when I kennel them.

Even though I don't plan on going on vacation until May I went ahead and got Gacie Bell's over with. You never know when an emergency will come up and you will need to board them.

The SHOT bortadella is good for a year, the intra nasal is only good for 6 months. There are two types. My vet gives the injectible shot not the intra nasal one anymore. They've gotten into it with my kennel as they do require it every 6 months but they do have the kennel to agree that the shot in good for a year. So if your dog is getting the SHOT one you're ok for a year, but if he/she is getting the intra nasal one it is good for only 6 months.

It really depends on the regulations for your area. Where I am in GA, they get their rabies once a year and bordatella every six months. I have one dog whose immune system went crazy a couple of years ago, and she doesn't get any shots at all now. She is closely monitored by our vet.

Our kennel requires it every 6 months too, for the reasons that the poster mentioned above. My vet thinks the dog would "probably be okay" with once per year, but agrees that it's not worth the risk, so we do it every 6 months (or before we kennel, if it's been longer than 6 months) just to be safe.

Same here. It will depend on the place you are boarding what the rules are.

We have boarded in some places that required every 6 months in order to board.

That was my thought. It seems they are trying to find all kinds of reasons to charge more. The last time I got his Sentinal I said I wanted a prescription because I was going to get it at petmeds.com and they quickly said they would match the price on petmeds. So they have been charging more all along.

I do know of a case where a dog got into a fight with an animal out in the wild, and even though the dog was up-to-date on rabie vaccinations, the vet went ahead and gave the dog another booster vaccine.

Where are you in North Jersey? If you're in Bergen, I advise you to take your dog to either River Edge or Dumont Animal Hospital, simply because neither of these vets will rip you off.

There are some real thieves in veterinary practice around here. Avoid the Oradell Animal Hospital (which is actually in Paramus) like the plague! They'll have you taking a second mortgage out on your house.

And if this is your area, for boarding, I recommend the Cedar Lane Pet Lodge in River Vale. The family who owns this kennel lives on-site and it's next door to a cemetery. The dogs can howl their heads off to each other without bothering anyone.

Our dogs aren't boarded. But, my groomer, who runs a very cool cageless, doggy daycare/grooming, play day extravaganza requires any dogs that come in get bordatella every 6 months. I chose to do it because I want my dogs to go to that certain groomer. To me, it's worth the money.
