How tall should they be< and do you really only put books in them?

I think height depends on the room you're putting them in. Is it a small room where large shelves will make it look cramped; do you want them to be the focus of the room etc.?

My office is the converted third bedroom so it is the smallest one and my bookshelves are pretty big, probably a foot lower than the ceiling, but since I only have two of them, they don't take over the whole room.

While I do use mine mostly for books, I also like to put little knick knacks on them as well. I don't have anything big on there. A couple of decorative book ends and some small things like a snowglobe and wooden boxes. It's all a matter of personal taste I think.

Let's see...we have two built-ins in the family room. They're about a foot and a half from the ceiling. In one are two shelves of books and the rest is electronic equipment, dvds, etc. The other is filled with board games, dice, electronic games, etc. Oh, and on the top of one is a Vader helmet, Storm Trooper helmet, and some kind of replica of a Star Wars ship. On the other top is a UK signed basketball, and a couple other sports things I can't think of right now...hmmm.

In the living room, we have one free-standing unit that houses mostly books with a few framed photos and a couple of nicer souvenirs (fossils, a NA Kachina doll, some antique opera glasses, etc).
