Booking with DVC

Hey all...in process of closing on a DVC membership right now (resale). Did a ton of research and still feel like it was never enough. I have a question about booking windows and UY if someone could help out.

Essentially what I am trying to figure out is with our UY of April 2018, can we book something for August 2018 in September/October 2017 even though we won't have those usage points until April? Does the system know the points WILL be there for travel and allow that? Hope this makes sense.

Yes, the booking system will know that your 2018 points are available for an August 2018 booking.

Yes. There's really no receiving points - technically you got them all when you purchased and they are just sitting there until you are able to use them because of the limitation of booking 11 months ahead.

So WHEN you book has nothing to do with your UY or points. For every owner no matter what the UY they can book 11 months out at their home resort and 7 months out at a non-home resort. Where the UY comes into play is just with what points you will be using for that reservation. With an April UY your 2018 points are valid to be used for stays from April 1, 2018-March 31 2019. If you wanted to stay anytime between April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018 you would have to borrow those points to use them. Or if you wanted to stay anytime between April 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020 and to use your 2018 points you would have to bank them. But any stay you can book at 11 months out for your home resort.

You need to have points available for the UY of your stay, not when you book.

One more follow up...the contract we bought has 100 points banked for this current year (April 2017), so when I book for August, the system will automatically use those, correct? Or I have to designate to use those?

And then when do I need to bank the 2018 100 points from UY April 2018 by in order to not lose them? We are not going to use 200 this coming year, so that 100 would more than enough for us. And I am correct that those 100 banked points need to be used by April 1 208, correct?

Regarding banking I tend to wait either until I'm ready to book with the points or I'm at the deadline. You never know when you might suddenly take a last minute trip!

OP IMHO, get together an Excel Spreadsheet that you understand suggestions for including as top of the line things to have:
Website login information
UY
Banking Deadline
Current points in each UY
Planned/Possible trips - need to be looking at least 3 years out
Completed trips - with a area for listing where you stayed (some include the room number) and anything special you did during the trip
Current reservations include points required, location, and reservation number
Anything else you care to have documented over time
