Booking sw with points

If I use points to book a flight on SW and then I need to cancel do the points go right back into my account? Are there any restrictions? Just wondering if there is a time limit to reuse them or any other catch I need to know about. I've never used points on the new system. Thanks

They go right back into your account as if they had never been used.

They go in immediately. Very handy when rebooking a flight when the price drops.
