booking rooms on cash and points

Starting to plan for family trip for next thanksgiving, but do not have enough points and do not want to borrow. Extended family wants to pay somethng toward their stay, so realized if they pay for Friday and Saturday, I have enough points for the rest of the week. So can you book those rooms on cash and book the other days on points, and how far in advance can you book the cash rooms? thanks

I booked my Dec. trip with points and DVC cash discount. I did my points at 11 months at VWL but the cash discount wasn't available then. I called back about a month later and was able to make the cash discount ressies for Fri. & Sat.

Just a potential side note, you didn't indicate where you were aiming to book, but in the event you're attempting to get a BW view at BWV, you cannot pay cash for this type of accommodation. Only available on points. Often times the cash ressie portion is available for booking the following week, depending when you call during the week.

You can book the entire stay, points and cash at rack rate, at one time through MS - tell them to link the reservations, and inquire about the Member Discount on the cash nights. The Member Discount is only available for the room in which the actual member is staying (officially). If the discount is not available when you make the reservation, you have a choice: Make the reservation anyway and keep calling back (I choose this - they'll give you the discount later when it pops up but you are secure knowing you have a room) or wait if you really don't ever want to pay rack rate. AP discounts also become available at some point, but these are becoming more rare during popular times and you are not assured of not having to change rooms between the points and cash nights.

I have done that. Actually today just made reservations for next summer using points, then cash for Fri/Sat, back to points. I told CM what I wanted to do and asked if member rate was avaliable for Fri/Sat. It was and CM tied together my reservation so it will be as if one reservation for 12 days instead of a 5 day stay, 2 day stay, 5 day stay- though I have 3 confirmation numbers.
