Booking reservation points at DL

We have stayed at VGC twice and had short successful wait lists both times. This was before kids and when we had more flexibility with our scheduling. The next time we go to Disneyland I want more of a sure thing, so I am considering booking reservation points on a regular room at Disneyland Hotel, Grand Californian or Paradise Pier if we can’t get the villa we need.

I am aware that reservation points are not an economical use of points, but this will be our only Disney trip that year so we are okay using a good number of our points to ensure we have a Disney place to stay on this particular trip, even if those accommodations are smaller and we have to use more points.

A few questions ...

-I do not want to waitlist a villa if I have already booked via reservation points, correct? If a villa opens up, I can’t use the points for it instead because once they’re reservation points, they stay reservation points. Do I have this right?

-We wouldn’t expect to cancel but if we had to cancel or reschedule, can the points be used as reservation points on another date? Is there a time they need to be used by? (I’m assuming within the UY but not sure.)

Yes. Once a point becomes a reservation point, it cannot be used to book a DVC resort.

Correct. Reservation points expire at the end of the use year. You can find more information on reservation points on the Members Website.
