Hi . Preparing for my 1st ever cruise, coming from Europe, with family, 2 kids 8 and 11. Time: pre Christmas (Dec 19, 3 night Bahamas). We have independent air booking, and cruise booking with TA in Europe. Some questions:

1. Pre cruise night at Hyatt Regency. What is the best way/rate/ to get a better deal?
2. Transfer to cruise/car rent: after the cruise we are staying and travelling around for a week. What would be better way to book a transfer? My idea would be booking with Disney express round trip, then at the airport rent a car. Why at airport? Because it is easier to drop it off before our flight back. Does it make sense? Where would our bags from the cruise be, after the cruise, if we choose this option?
Thanks a lot :)

1. If you're will to wait, we use hotwire.com and betterbidding.com to get the best rate around 45-60 days out. Costco also has member deals for hyatt.
2. Florida has a hidden airport car rental fee. Not really hidden per se bc you see it but most people dont know it's cheaper to rent away from an airport. Convenience makes that challenging.

You could take DCL transfers to the port from the airport for $35 pp one way (Hyatt will give you all the info you need when you check in if you tell them you are going on the cruise)

After the cruise you can rent a car from an agency near the port (they all have shuttles from the ship to the rental office). This way you avoid the parking at the port fee of $15 per day ($60 for a 3 day cruise as they charge per day, not per night). No need to return to the airport to rent a car...you can do a one way rental from the port area and return it back to the airport before your flight. This way you say an additional $35 pp DCL transfer charge from the ship to the airport.

Here is what happens with luggage the last day of the cruise. The night before you would put your luggage out in the hall and staff will move it to a holding room. When the ship docs the luggage is off loaded into the terminal and sorted by deck and cabin # area (color coded). You will leave the ship with your carryons and find your luggage in the terminal and walk it through customs. Once you clear customs you will be directed to either the DCL bus or the rental car shuttle area or the parking garage if you have a car parked there.

Thank you for this, I didn't know!

Thanks. Great help. Do I have to make rental arrangements for the car beforehand if I rent by the port?

If you are staying a night before your cruise and it's off Disney property than Disney Cruise transportation is not available. I would suggest renting a car, driving to port and parking at an off port site, the following thread has some options: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3037465

It's always a good idea to make car rental reservations before your arrival for a couple of reasons, 1. you will know the price the pay before you arrive at the desk and 2. you make sure they have a car available. Some agencies do run out of cars and you won't be able to rent one if you just walk up to the desk and ask.

You can buy Disney Cruise transfers and the Disney Cruise line bus will pick you up a the airport. What you can't use is the Magical Express which is Disney's free transportation from MCO to WDW resorts. The Disney Cruise line transfers can be round trip so you would be able to rent a car at the airport after your cruise.

I wouldn't want to pay $35 per person for DCL transfers from the port to the airport then rent a car. Would rather just rent the car at the port.

And yes, people who stay at the MCO Hyatt use DCL transfers to the ship quite often.

Once you clear customs, if you're taking the bus, you or the porter you have help you will take the bags outside, and the bags will be put under your bus. When you get to the airport, you get your bags from the bus and take them to the rental car area. And go from there. :)

It's not always cheaper, not at all, to rent away from the airport. Everyone needs to check their dates and their needs for every trip. And then keep on checking!

For our last trip, renting from the airport and returning to the Dolphin is what yielded the best rate. For other trips, renting at MCO has been, by FAR, the absolute best rate. You have to check for every trip, repeatedly, because the only absolute with renting cars in Orlando is that there are no absolutes.

Heck, most people say that in most states, one-way, multi-state rentals have huge surcharges. And yet I rented a car in Phoenix to be dropped off in Anaheim for almost nothing. Awesome, awesome rate. Apparently National needed that car to go to Anaheim, and I'm how they had that happen. : )

The DCL bus leaves from the airport, and is available for anyone who books that bus option and gets themselves to the airport! The airport buses start leaving a whole lot earlier than the resort buses, that's for sure!

We're going on our first cruise ever, too. But we've been to the World many times. We've rented cars, taken the buses.

We gave in a couple of times ago and rented through Happy Limo. I've read bad reviews, but both times they were really wonderful to me. Our driver texted us when he was on the way, so I was assured of the pickup.

I just booked, albeit at a higher cost than other transfers, a suburban transfer and pickup from our cruise because my DH does not want to drive and listen to me navigate. He just wants to RELAX!

You can find them on the web.

Have fun!

How do I book the bus option of DCL bus, if I stay at Hyatt. Do I do it through Hyatt when I do booking with them? Or some other way?

You book through Disney Cruise lines if you booked the cruise directly with them, or have your TA do it if you used a TA. $35 per person each way. It's the same cost as taking the DCL bus from the WDW resort.

From what I've read for taking the bus from the airport to the port...you leave your bags in the Hyatt room (make sure they know when you check in that you're doing the DCL bus option!) and cruise personnel collect your bags that morning. That's the same procedure that happens from a WDW resort, by the way....they picked up our bags between 8 and 10 in the morning, and we left from Port Orleans Riverside at about 11:30.

You can check in for the bus starting early that morning, and take the bus out to the port. The bags will be magically put in your staterooms at some point after 1:30pm. Just in case they take some time to find you, be sure to put what you might need for pool, lounging, and dinner into a carryon that you keep with you that day!

FWIW you don't *have to* leave early on the DCL bus from the airport, it's just an option to do so. When leaving from a WDW resort on their bus, there's just the ONE option depending on what resort you are at, and it's leaving at some point after 11ish in the morning. :)
