Booking independent shore excursion?

We're heading on the Disney Dream this summer and want to do the Blue Lagoon Dolphin Swim. I'm considering booking directly through the vendor instead of DCL. We are aware of the risks we take in doing this, but wondering if any others have experience in doing it this way? The ship is due to dock at 9 am and the official Port Adventure has them leaving at 9:30. Can I get to the pick up point at Paradise Island Port for the 10:30 excursion (offered directly by the company)?

Anyone have any insight or thoughts in trying this?

Thanks
Susan

Be aware, often vendors that provide excursions to cruise ships have exclusive contracts that will not allow individual bookings directly, if you are a cruise passenger.

We did this last year. Well...we tried to. Once Blue Lagoon found out we were on a ship, they wouldn't let us book. My TA told me to check out Shore Excursions, which did let me book. I was paying for 11 of us so the savings were significant. Here is the info - http://www.shoreexcursionsgroup.com/Nassau-Excursions-s/89.htm.
Thanks for this tip!! I checked them out. Alas, they only seem to offer the lower-end version of the dolphin encounter we were hoping to do. They don't appear to offer the longer package that is available both on the vendors direct website or the Disney Port Adventure :( so bummed!

If you want BL, and you are sailing DCl, book through DCL. IMO.

You don't need the headaches trying to circumvent the rules and protocols.

It's not worth the trouble, nor the $30 per/pax savings. Again IMO, and IME.
Been there done that. Trust me. :o

Another aspect rarely, if ever, mentioned here.
Few mention that DCL customers on DCL sponsored excursions receive better care than other pax aboard other company vessels.

We have seen this repeatedly in varying ports.
This is something I never read about here in all my years.
It exists.

DCL must have some "pull" in some ports.

The vendors have a desire to satisfy DCL. Perhaps DCL pays bonuses for positive feedback.
Imagine that. Does "excellent ratings" ring a bell?

I know. Don't they have that same desire for other cruise lines? You would think.
But, our experience leads us to believe DCL pax somehow gets preferential treatment in many ports of call. Of course not all POC are created equal.

JMO and JME after many sails and ports.

May all POC be as smooth as Butter.

I haven't found this to be true.

OP, I would do what works for you, whether its a DCL excursion or independent excursion.

Neither have I. Almost all of our excursions (well over 100) are independent/private. Being shuttled around in a bus of 50, waiting for people to shop or take a restroom break is not my idea of a good time!

We did Blue Lagoon through DCL and loved it, but there was definitely no difference in service. Our DCL guide walked us to the catamaran, we boarded with all other guests from other lines, and rode to the island. Once there, your tickets determine where you go (dolphin, Beach, etc). They also let you upgrade while you are there, if there are openings.

After your activity you are on your own to wander around (not much to see), buy lunch at the snack shop, and catch a return boat at your leisure. It is not like an organized tour bus where you are stuck waiting for everyone to catch up. Point being, booking DCL or independent at Blue Lagoon won't give you any difference on experience or timing, while it certainly could on other tours.

I've done ship sponsored excursions as well as independent. I prefer the independents. It seems they often try harder. They're happy to have the business, and they're very aware of your ship's sailing time.

I second, or third, this! I can't speak for Nassau, but on Grand Cayman and Cozumel, we've only done non-DCL excursions and felt like we were on private charters and were treated like valued guests with incredibly personalized attention. In Grand Cayman, the company we used actually monitors the cruise ships, and our day was their DCL Fantasy day, they only took guests from the Fantasy bc they knew the port arrival and departure and tendering times. Just ask questions, do research, and shop around if you are so inclined and save some $$$$.

We also have done a mixture of DCL and independent excursions over the years, but now we almost exclusively book independently unless what we want to do can only be booked through DCL. In our experience the independent tours have been at worst just as good, and usually much, much better than anything booked through the cruise line. While tour companies may be looking for good feedback from DCL, you can better believe they are looking for good feedback from their independent customers as well. These companies live and die by online reviews. They are trying their best to make all of their customers happy, not just the ones booked through a certain cruise line.

We now try to avoid the cattle call tours if at all possible and go private. We do what we want, when we want on our own timetable - and have had some terrific guides. We also had an interesting discussion with one of those guides regarding DCL:

When we were in Kirkwall, Scotland we booked a private tour with the company most people recommended for this very small island. We were fortunate enough to have the owner of the company as our personal guide for the day. As the day went on, it was plain to see through her interactions with people we met, places we had access to (that no one on a DCL tour saw BTW), that her company pretty much ran the tourism industry in Kirkwall. This was the first time that DCL had docked there and she mentioned that several months ahead of time, DCL sent in representatives for a meeting with all of the tour companies in the area. They outlined how they wanted their guests treated, what they expected, etc. According to our guide, the tour operators were mostly offended. They took it as Disney trying to tell them how to do the job they very well already knew how to do and had been doing for years. Now, from another standpoint, yes, DCL was looking out for their passengers. But as our guide basically put it - they have been taking care of their tourists long before Disney got there and will continue to do so long after they leave. It was an interesting conversation.

Another interesting tidbit our guide told us - there was a group of imagineers on the ship and they had booked a private tour through her company as well. Now, her company was also running several bus tours for the cruise line, but the Disney employees chose to book privately with her! :P

OP - I know we've gone off topic, sorry, but felt the need to chime in on the private tour experience. Hope you enjoy Blue Lagoon however you end up doing it. We did this years ago (through Disney - at that time there really was very little difference in price and the experience was going to the be same either way) and really enjoyed it.

My rule of thumb is "the further away from the port the excursion is, the higher the odds I'll use a ship-based tour". Because while it is correct that no independent company wants the bad reviews from people missing the ship, things happen and sometimes they do. If you are on a ship-based excursion you are covered. On an independent one, you might or might not be.

I'm not saying don't book with them. I'm saying do your due diligence and press them on what they will do in the unlikely event that something not your fault (i.e.: you're not an hour late meeting your driver after touring something) happens that results in missing the ship. I did talk with one company about a possible excursion about that, and they refused to give me an answer beyond "we want to stay in business so we get you back in time". Nope. I want to know what if. No answer - or no acceptable answer, no booking from me.

Would you mind sharing who you used in Grand Cayman?

Absolutely! I've highly recommended them to friends (not on DCL, the most recent being two days ago, a friend on vacation on Grand Cayman): Stingray Sailing and also Cayman Eco Adventures . They are sister companies, one is on a 40ft caramaran, which sails to Sting Ray City then to a reef for amazing snorkeling (felt very safe with my 6 yr old twin daughters who are strong swimmers ); the other on a 40' "fast boat" gets you to Sting Ray City quicker , so you have time for snorkeling and a visit to a beach to see some star fish. Phenomenal. Our second trip with them, we were *the only* people at the sand bar feeding the stingrays, talk about a once in a lifetime experience! Can't say enough good things about their experience, knowledge, and education they provide. Plus on our catamaran, it was just us and one other family; fast boat, just us! We paid regular prices for what basically was a private charter! It depends what day which ship is in port which excursion they offer since it's all based on ships' arrival /departure times. I emailed them extensively, and they were very quick to respond and assure me of their policies since safety is my number one concern with my girls.
