I have been checking for flights on delta. When I put 7 passengers the price is higher than if I put 4 or 3. If I book for 4 of us then book for 3 of us will the price for both be the lower price? Should I split the group to get the lower price?

There may be a blend of pricing currently in place- not all 7 available seats are the same price. Depending on the algorithms, the system may be totaling up different pricing or charging a flat rate for all 7 seats.

My experience, albeit not on Delta, is that if there are X seats at one fare and you put in more than X, all seats will be at the higher fare. If you split the booking, you will get the lower fare for at least part of the group. I have also done a split booking and gotten the lower fare for both groups. Not sure why but it has happened for me.

Thanks so I guess we won’t know until I try a split booking. I wonder if I make an account for one other and they book it in their account we would all be able to get the lower price?

Don’t think different accounts matter. It’s how many seats are available at the lower fare. Again, my experience is not with Delta so YMMV.

As others have said, to get at least some of the tickets at the lower price, you'll need to split your group into different reservations. Whether that's 4/3, 5/2, or 6/1, you need to experiment with.

Something you can TRY...
1) Open a browser, go to Delta.com, put in your search criteria (for group 'A'), select your flight, get to the last page, put in seat selection, CC info, etc but don't click "purchase".
2) Open up another browser (or go to private/incognito mode), on the same device or a different one, go to Delta.com, put in your search criteria (for group 'B'), select your flight, get to the last page and fill everything out.
3) Click "Purchase" on both pages as close to simultaneously as you can.

This *MIGHT* get you the same price. My theory is the second search (for group B) will still show you the lower price because group A hasn't actually claimed the seats yet.

One thing to keep in mind (and may not be a factor), any benefits held by a single person (thinking free bags or priority boarding) will only apply to the group that person is travelling with. Example: If one person has a Delta AmEx card and gets free bags, only those in their group will get that benefit. So if they're in the group of four, four people can get free bags, but the other group won't. Three people * $35/bag/one way * 2 round trip = $210 extra charge.

Good suggestions above. Once you do get the two (or more) separate bookings, have Delta link them as "traveling together". That way if there are irregular operations your group won't be split up.
