Booking Dilemma

I currently have a reservation for Old Key West for October 20-25, 2021. I’m trying to cancel October 20 because I made a reservation for Riviera for that one night. My goal is to reserve all nights of our stay at Riviera. Not sure that will happen and we don’t mind changing resorts. My dilemma is that my deadline to bank unused points is today. I’m sure I will use more points if I’m able to get our remaining nights at Riviera. I just don’t want to lose points. How would you handle this situation?

Thanks,
Lisa

I would bank the points and then borrow from next year if you need some extra points when switching to Riviera. This assumes that you would be able to borrow enough points to make that change.

I agree..bank and then borrow as needed. It may require calling if you have an account that has issues borrowing.

But that is really the only way to ensure no loss of points.

Or you can purchase up to 24 one time use points to complete a reservation inside of 7 months.

Borrowing is going to be a problem. This is one of the reasons why use year is so important.

I'm guessing you'll want to book the Riviera room before you cancel your OKW room. That means you'll have to borrow for the full point cost, and you'll be stuck with the points released from the OKW reservation expiring at the end of your use year.

Or, you can take the risk of cancelling the OKW room when you see Riviera availability and hope it doesn't disappear before you can grab it; and also hope that your OKW room doesn't get booked in case you miss the Riviera room.

The modify option helps if the entire overlapping stay is available, but if you're cancelling one night at a time, this could be very painful.

The only thing I will add is that once you get one night freed up because you got one booked, it can work easily without having to cancel OKW first.

For example, you get night one by borrowing the points. Then you free up the night from OKW. That puts the freed up points there for night 2. This way, you always have extra to start with and then you only ever have to borrow what you are short.

If, for that first night you had enough or extra to book without much borrowing, it works even better.
