Hello everyone,

We are looking at booking our first cruise and had a question regarding the booking process and travel insurance. If we see a stateroom come up that we want to book and book it with a hold do we have to select the insurance before we complete the hold or can we update it once we log on to complete the payment for the deposit?

Also do you use the insurance through DCL or recommend another company such as Allianz?

Thanks for any advice you can give me

If you want the insurance through DCL, I believe you can add it at any point up until PIF. It's not actually purchased and in effect until PIF, but you would need to call to add it after initial booking.

Google trip insurance comparison sites and the most popular 2-3 will pop to the top. You can use those to input your parameters and compare offerings. Once you narrow it down to a couple, I recommend you CALL to discuss any specific concerns and make sure you understand the coverage you are purchasing.

It is my understanding that you can add DCL insurance until you make your final payment!

Other companies also sell it but have different rules around when you can get the insurance and what it covers based on when you buy the insurance. In most cases you get the best options when getting insurance within 14 days of paying the cruise deposit. Otherwise you can usually get insurance as long as you haven’t made your final payment.

Hope this helps.

You can even buy insurance after you've PIF. You just can't get insurance to cover certain things later -- for example you can't add insurance after the weather report indicates a hurricane is heading to FL.

Thanks for the information. We are looking during the summer months and figured adding insurance would be good for a cruise during the summer time due to the hurricane season.

Insurance purchased through Disney Cruise covers only the costs booked through Disney Cruise and issues during the cruise. If you want to cover cancellations or delays for airfare purchased separately, non-refundable hotel stays, and medical issues during travel to and from the cruise, you are better off with insurance purchases separately. However, you may already have some travel insurance coverage through a credit card.

One feature you get when buying through DCL that you might not get otherwise is a credit of 75% of your cruise fare (good for another cruise within 1 year) if you cancel for a non-covered reason. You can buy cancel for any reason insurance for an additional fee with some other policies, but often only if you buy the insurance within a short time of making your initial payment.
