booking and then upgrading

can i book package with hotel and 1 day park ticket and then upgrade it with DDP and add days to the park tickets about a month before the trip...????

I don't see why not. Disney doesn't usually have a problem with changes to a reservation that include increasing cost within the 45 day window. It's the ones that decrease cost that usually require a change fee. The Dining Plan must be added a more than 5 days before check in though.
The balance of the additions will, of course, be required when you make the change.

I thought there was a $50 change fee for any change made to a package price 44 days or less to arrival. My understanding was that this includes any price change whether it increases or decreases the price.

Can you explain why you want to book the package ahead of time with less park tickets? Are you trying to take advantage of free dinning?

Disney usually waives the $50 change fee if the total cost increases. With that said, there is now a $15 fee for any changes made 14 days or less prior to arrival, regardless of what it does to the total cost.
