Hi all. Totally noob question, but when you book a 2BR, do you have the option to choose dedicated vs lock off? And if you choose lock off, do you have the option to “release” the studio portion of that? (Up to a point). We’d need the 2BR if my parents come, but would prefer to save the points and just do 1BR if they don’t. AKV if it matters at all...

Yes you can choose if the resort has both options available. You would not be able to release the studio portion. You would have to rebook a 1 bedroom, which should be easy once you release it. Id call to have that done if there isn't a 1 bedroom available before you modify on your own.

Awesome. Thanks. That would work. Is there a deadline on that or is the only consideration doing it before the banking deadline?

Actually, it is not that easy to simply cancel the 2 bedroom and then get the 1 bedroom back.

if there is a waitlist, it will be filled that way. So, if you book a 2 bedroom and later don’t need it, you will only be able to downsize If the 1 bedroom is still available.

Canceling it won’t automatically mean you will be the one to get it.

Thanks. Makes sense, though it seems crappy. Feels like I should be able to keep the one side and then release the studio side to the waitlist if there is one. But rules are rules. Bottom line I guess would be check with member services before we do anything.

You could always pay the lockoff premium and book a 1br and a studio, then request adjoining. It's a horrible use of points if you end up having both but makes it simple to cancel either half. There is no guarantee of the adjoining but at the lockoff resorts I would not imagine an issue with it being filled.

Just remember there are people who are on a waitlist for 2 bedrooms as well so if they simply allowed it, it would be very difficult for those to ever fill.

As mentioned, one way is to book each part as it’s own but no guarantee it can be a 2 bedroom at check in.

Hopefully, if you did need to downsize there will still be 1 bedrooms available at the resort and you will get what you need!

Yeah, agreed. It'll be high demand time around New Years though. So I need to get my parents to commit one way or the other....but getting them to do that 11 months out will be a challenge! My gut tells me they won't commit and then we just book the 1BR.

I just booked a 2 BR at OKW for next October and was able to get a lock off. Son and DIL probably won't be able to make it as they are spending two weeks in WY and then two weeks in NY and NH next Christmas. They just did the drive this month, so I thought I'd book it "just in case" they want to do a last minute trip. We planned on getting a 1 BR and then getting them whatever was out there at 7 or less months, but we have plenty of points this year, so maybe I get my own bathroom this trip!

Interesting topic...and i've been scrutinizing these a bit more. I'm not really sure why, but the studio + 1br are more expensive in points than a 2br (even though logistically, they're the same as the 2br lockoff). For example, I was looking at a stay at CCV/BRV and the studio is 49, 1br is 100, and 2br is 129. If the 2brs are sold out, it's confusing to me why the studio + 1br is more points when it's the same square footage that you're using. Seems like 2brs are a better deal than a 1br anyway, but I get it if you don't need the space. I would say if you don't need the extra space, just switch to any available studio as opposed to the 1br and add a night. :) In my scenario here, instead of doing 1 night in a 1br + studio at 149 points if the 2br is not available, try to get 3 nights in a studio for the 49 points a night.

That only works if you like studios, which are often gone before one bedrooms.

True - that makes sense. I just bought DVC and have only been an owner for about 6 days so far to access online so I’m still figuring this all out - but yes totally makes sense - 1brs seem to have more availability than studios and depends on what you’re looking for when booking a stay.
