I'm so excited! I just booked a 1-brm at Old Key West resort for 11 nights in November. Sadly, I am not a DVC member......yet.....and am not very familiar with this resort, so I thought I would pick your collective brains.

I will be traveling with my mother who will be 68 at the time of the trip. This will be my 3rd trip to the World, having previously stayed at Carribean Beach and AKL. This is however, my mothers first extended trip to Disney, and I want to make it perfect.

I've been reading as much as I could about OKW, looked at tons of pictures, and the impression I get is that there is really no "bad" view. Certainly, not like the infamous "dumpster" view I've read about at VWL.

Is this assumption true? I'm a fanatical golfer, so a golf course view would be fine with me, as would a canal or woods view. Does it really matter?

Mom plans on taking advantage of the porch frequently, and I'd like it to be pleasant for her.

What do you folks think?

You guys will LOVE OKW. We have been taking my mom for the last couple years and she really enjoys relaxing at OKW. She is 73.

I agree, there really aren't any bad views at OKW. We have never had a complaint with location.

Can your mom get around well? Be aware that most of the buildings at OKW do not have elevators. So, if she has any difficulties walking, you will need to request a 1st floor due to medical reasons. If she doesn't have any problems, I like to request a 3rd floor. That way you don't have noise from people above you. I also like the view from higher up.

My mom loves to sit out on the porch at OKW and drink her coffee, relax and enjoy the sounds and sights. The first time we took my mom, we went to BWV because I thought she would enjoy being closer to all the things on the boardwalk. She loved the trip. However, the next time, we stayed at OKW and now she is hooked. Everytime she asks if we can stay at OKW. Enjoy!

I think you both are going to love it! Tell them you would like a golf course view as one of your requests. While no view is bad, I bet you would really enjoy looking out over the course. If stairs aren't an issue (you can request no third floor), the views really are a bit better.

you are taking your Mom. Our Mother went up until she was 79 to OKW. She took her last trip at 80 to HH with us and passed away 2 months later. The memories are the best thing about DVC. We have so many wonderful ones. It will mean so much to you later and I hope your Mom has a great time!

I don't remember the room number but it was by Turtle Pond area and the view was of nothing but a bunch of woods, nothing else. Out of the four stays we've had there this was the worst.

We take my DM who is 71 (shhh, don't tell - she'll be mad at me) frequently, and she loves it! She's been with us at BWV, BCV and next month at VWL.

I don't believe that there are too many rooms at OKW that have bad views.

Good for you taking your DM. She'll probably love OKW, and will likely be more patient with some of the aspects that we younger folk complain about.

Enjoy your trip!

My mom LOVES PI, so you might want to make it a point of taking a boat to PI with your DM while you are at OKW. It is lovely at dusk. Enjoy!

I am a DVC member and I am taking my parents to OKW in July.

Dad is 70 and mom is 69. So I'll be sure to post a trip report after I get back that maybe you can use as a reference.

I am using my points to put mom & dad in a studio. I will put my family of 5 in a 2-bedroom. :smooth:

My mom will soon be 74 and OKW (our home resort) is her favorite place. She, too, really enjoys sitting on the porch with her morning coffee and taking the boat over to the Marketplace. We go to the parks for a morning or an evening or sometimes on all-day 2-park marathons!

I usually request a room on Old Turtle Pond road and have rarely been disappointed with the view. However, on our last trip last September, the view was non-existent and the whole villa was quite dark and cave-like. I wish I could remember the number of the building, but it was directly in back of the bus stop (near where I have stayed before with no problems).

OKW is a very relaxing resort and I'm sure you will enjoy it. I love it!

When I take my mom to OKW, I always request water view first floor because she gets a kick out of the ducks & birds right outside. They tend to hang around the water areas. We had a great 1 bedroom last month, building 43 (4311). The last morning there was a duck with 3 little ducklings, she got a big kick out of that. Watch the golf views - those along the fairways sometimes have alot of foilage to protect the buildings from ball hits. We had a dark room once in building 28. I would specify golf green view if that's what you are looking for.

Thanks for all the great advice and encouragement! The more I read your kind replies, the more my stress level about the room drops. Now we've got 5 months to plan the rest of our trip. Food and Wine Festival here we come!
