I called yesterday and booked a one bedroom for HHI in October. This is my childrens fall break and we were looking for something to do. I had planned on booking a Disney World trip, but as usual... SSR and OKW were our only options. We have never been to HHI so I booked it on a whim since it was available. I know this is a popular destination for many of you, but would you advise going in October? Will the pools be open? Too cold? What are some "must do" activities? I am considering changing my ressie back to SSR or OKW. Please convince me to try HHI..........

October is one of the best times to visit HHI - the weather is generally still quite warm and the crowds are gone.

Where to begin....My absolutely favorite fall break destination. The resort itself will offer many activities and my kids have enjoyed every one of them. The October weather is wonderful. The pool will definitely be open (we swam during Christmas). The ocean may even be an option depending on the weather because the water will still be warm. We are not big bike riders but we always rent bikes for the week and go on bike rides around the area. The kayaking is fun as is the dolphin cruise. Crabbing is at its best at this time and always a lot of fun. My son and I are golfers and love the Palmetto Dunes courses across the road. Dont miss anything with B'lou Crabbe. He is very entertaining. We have done Geo-caching, made disney pillows, tie-dye shirts, scavenger hunts, and the list goes on and on. Oh gosh, I almost forgot, don't miss the campfires, they are a blast. Especially the first couple of times you do them. You make real smores, at no charge.

You will only be a 45 minute drive from Savannah-off season, nice weather. A great day trip. I'd look in a guide book (like Fodor's) for some children friendly ideas. They will love the ocean because it will still be warm and the waves are very gentle. The restaurants will be much less crowded and offer specials for the off season. There are several great places to cook out.
I think everyone should try HHI at least once-it's a beautiful family resort and a nice break from the parks. I don't think you'd be sorry! :)

Great choice!
As others have said the weather will still be warm and the water too.
The resort is finishing a refresh and should look very nice for your arrival.
The island is not as busy as Spring break or Summer.
Bike rides on the beach, boating, fishing, golf, tennis and a ton of dining options make for a super vacation.
The island in general reminds me of WDW in that the town controls the land developement and preserves the natural surroundings. It is well manicured and clean.
In my opinion it is a super destination for families.
You'll enjoy a visit!

Thanks for the advise my wife and I are sold now we just have to convince the kids. Of coarse they are concerned with the "no rides" issue. May end up booking okw to please them. Win win situation if u ask me.

I don't know how old your kids are - but if I asked my DS 12 where he would rather go HHI or DisneyWorld - he picks HHI every time. He loves the CM's, the pool parties, kids night out, campfires, crabbing, watching the dolphins from our porch, etc.

My kids(7 and 9) have been going to HH since my youngest was 6 months old, and while they LOVE WDW, they love HH just a tiny bit more.

My children are the same way. We have a real difficult time deciding on where to go. But What we have learned is that they prefer to do HH with a little Disney World thrown in ever so often.
