I am looking for some book suggestions for my 8 year old dd who is in second grade. She is reading on almost a 4th grade level. We are out of Magic Tree House and Junie B. Jones. I have been reading some book reviews on Amazon and some are saying that the books spill the secret of Santa and I definitely don't want that. I also am having problems finding books that are still age 8 appropriate. I don't want any book that talks about girlfriends and boyfriends.

HELP!!!!!

Gr 4 level? try the City of Ember series. Wow. My gr 4 teacher said you "have to read this"! It was great.

Also, the tale of Despaureux the mouse was fantastic!

Here is a good list of books too:

Try the online book sales at Amazon, etc. great selections there. Often they will point out the books that have won awards for a good reason!

My DD is also 8 and reading on a 4th and 5th grade level so sometimes hard to find books. She really likes all the American Girl Doll Books. She just read a Book called Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The librarian said it's really popular with the kids 9 of the 10 copies were checked out.

Mr. Poppers Penguins (an oldie but goodie)
Nancy Drew or Trixie Belden series
Charlotte's Web (although obviously death is discussed)

Have you looked into older books? Depending on your DD, she might find them "uncool" or might find them really great. We have plenty at our house and my eight year old niece just devours them. Things like Mary Poppins and Milly-Molly-Mandy are her favorites. Along with my favorites from my own childhood, the Swallows and Amazons series. I don't know anything about newer books though, it seems children's literature is getting worse and worse as the years go on.

My 8 year old loves Judy Moody books. I also took her to Barnes and Noble and they have a great selection of books for upper el reading level but still nothing bad in them!

What about Harry Potter? My DD (7) is now on book 4....she loves them, and having read them myself, I know the content is fine. She loves looking forward to seeing the movie when she finishes a book...& we have a family "movie night"....
i know it wouldn't be some people's first choice, but she made it through the junie b. series in K, the American girl series in 1st, & then we started reading the little house series, but I wasn't thrilled w/ the content so that has been shelved after 2 chapters. she enjoyed the magic treehouse's as well, but you said she read those....it's hard when they are reading a few years above their age - def. makes for a challenge!

What about the Daisy Meadow Fairy books? or the Unicorn School? My girls love them! Or the Babysitting Club?

Go to your local library & tal to the Children's librarian - he/she can direct you to a ton of series/chapter books that your dd might enjoy!

I second Diary of the Wimpy Kid, also my second grader likes those Hanna Montana, Zack and Cody, etc TV sitcom chapter books as well.

We have the same problem. My son reads on a higher level and my mother bought him books that I guess are middle-school age because he keeps showing my the curse words in them! I don't know why they have to do that to a otherwise good book.

My daughter is in first grade but checks out books from the school library for me to read to her. She likes the Pony Pals series and there is a chapter book series about Tink and her fairy friends. She also brought me a chapter book version of Enchanted. Good luck!

There is a series entitlted "Emily Windsnap.........." my daughter really like those. My daughter also enjoyed the Animorphs stories, even though at first glance they look more "boyish." Bevery Cleary is also a good, she writes the Ramona books.

My dd (9, but also an advanced reader) has been reading Kingdom Keepers and really likes them. Unfortunately, there are only 2 in the series right now, but she's hoping for more. She also enjoys the American Girl books. I also second the Trixie Beldon books if you can find them. I loved those as a kid.

Rald Dahl books are great....Charlie and the chocolate factory, the BFG (a great book) Matilda. Little House books. Harry Potter. The City of Ember series are great books too.

loved the Wizard of Oz series. I'm always surprised when I don't see it mentioned.

When she was that age we went through a huge book/movie stage and had a great time. It's fun to compare them both.

Mary Poppins
Ella Enchanted
Charlotte's Web
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Stuart Little
Alice in Wonderland
Secret Garden
Little Princess
Peter Pan

I'm sure there are more.. but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm going to second the PP who suggested the Little House series... Matter of fact, I got the set when I was 8, and I think it was the best gift I got that year.

My DD is your age & we have the same situation (much higher reading level). She loves:

-Babymouse (comic books)
-Harry Potter (she's decided to read the series straight through)
-Kilala Princess (name is a link) Its Disney Princess Manga. DD has the first book & is dying for the 2nd.

Rald Dahl books are great....Charlie and the chocolate factory, the BFG (a great book) Matilda. Little House books. Harry Potter. The City of Ember series are great books too.

:thumbsup2
DD loved the Dahl books. She started with James and the Giant Peach and was hooked. She now likes the 39 Clues series from Scholastic.

In 3rd grade she started reading the Dear America series but I put a stop to it. The content is way too mature for a 3rd grader. We were reading one of the books together and it was about the Holocaust. They mentioned beatings, murder and suicide. I hope she still likes historical fiction when she gets a little older b/c I think this is an excellent series.

The Clementine books by Sara Pennypacker. Should be an easy read but quite funny and age appropriate.

What about the Stink books. Judy Moody's books about her brother Stink.

Nancy Drew books.

My DD 7 loves the American Girl books. The Little House books are good also. She likes the Cam Jansen books, but they are not very hard; however, she likes to finish books quickly. She also likes the easier Nancy Drew books. Beverly Cleary would probably be good with her, but I haven't tried them yet. I could never get my DS interested in them!

I love Harry Potter, but I wouldn't go much further than number 3 if you don't want language or boyfriend/girlfriend issues. Trust me, I was the mean mom with my DS who could easily read them in second grade, but I just didn't see the point of rushing them. He reads one a year. I think maturity wise he could now handle them all (9), but he has so many other books I am sticking to my one a year unless he directly asks.

E.B. White is also good. (Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little)
