Does anyone have any good books, particularly series, to recommend for a 10 year old girl? She is a good reader but tends to like easy reading for her downtime. She LOVED the Babysitter's Club and Madison Finn series, but doesn't like most mysteries or fantasy. Realistic fiction seems to be her thing! She hasn't been reading as much now that she read all the Babysitter's Club ones, so I'd love to find a new series to peak her interest in books again.

Have you tried the american girl books? My girls loved them when they were 10 or so. Also dd says the princess diaries books are really good, though she was probably 12 or so when she read them.

I have a word of caution against Princess Diaries. The first few books are alright for that age group, but they quickly become a lot about dating, relationships, and eventually sex becomes the central theme as well. Up to you of course, but they don't strike me as appropriate for a 10 year old. There's 10 books and I stopped at 8 because I didn't like where the series was going. I think it had something to do with the fact in the 8th book Mia's grandmother suggests that the best way to get her boyfriend to not go away to Japan for a year would be to sleep with him.

I will put in my vote for American Girls being excellent books, I loved them when I was 8,9,10, because that way you're the same age as the girls in the books. Too bad she doesn't like mysteries or fantasy cause I enjoy those genres and know more about them than others, but I'll see if I can think of some new books she would enjoy.

Thanks, I forgot about American Girl, she has read all of those, too! I agree, I love fantasy and mystery and can't believe she won't read Nancy Drew or Harry Potter! It sounds like she is young for Princess Diaries. Thank you for your ideas.

I like the Peter and the Starcatchers series by Ridley Pierson and his other series Kingdom Keepers. Both would be good for a boy or girl.

I really enjoyed the Peter and the Starcatchers. I'm even re-reading them!

I thought It'd throw this out there even though they could be considered mysteries. I work at a library and one series we have a hard time keeping on the shelves is the 39 Clues series. It's about a brother and sister team who are traveling all over the world on a kind of scavenger hunt to uncover the treasure their family has been protecting for centuries. I've read the first 5 (there's going to be 10) and I think they're pretty good. They travel to many different countries and so you learn a bit about different cultures (my degree is in History, so I'm a bit nerdy when it comes to these things) and there's a good amount of action; they're very fast-paced. The first is called the Maze of Bones and they travel to Paris and you learn about the catacombs, among other things.

Sweet Valley Twins! I bought DD10 1-37 off of eBay last Christmas and she looooves them!! The Twins series, in Middle School, NOT Sweet Valley High, LOL. I just checked out for her all 5 of the Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief books from the library, she can't read them until I do tho. :-D

Perhaps go to the library and see what she gravitates toward?

The Dear America Series. They are absolutely wonderful books. They are written in a diary format and each one is written by a girl from that time period. They have them from girls in the American revolution, crossing the country in a wagon train, civil war, slavery, mill girls in the northeast, WWII, Civil Rights, think of a time period they have it. There are also some written from a boys perspective. They are very well written and great for this age. My DD loved these and has at least 20 if not more of them. They are very realistic and not sugar coated fluff, they are historically accurate.

These are not the American Girl books.

Meet the Austins by Madeleine L'Engle

There are several books about the Austin family after this book and Madeleine L'Engle wrote all kinds of books. This book has been around for a long time but is timeless.

Thank you - I already went to the library and checked some of the suggested books out. If she likes them, I'll try to get some on ebay for her for Christmas. Thanks for all the suggestions - they were very helpful!

Wow. Someone's on the same wavelength as I am. That's the series I first thought of too!

My 10-year-old DD is slowly working her way throught he 100-plus Boxcar children books, among reading others that are harder. She likes mysteries and fantasy. I found a list on Wikipedia of all the books in order, so I just check them out a couple at a time.

She and her grandmother bought a bunch of the Sweet Valley Twins books at a library book sale.

I am planning on introducing the Percy Jackson ones the next time her interest flags in her other books.

I have a very advanced 8 y/o reader who LOVES the Percy Jackson books. We actually just welcomed our "elf of a shelf" today and all the kids voted to name him Percy. :goodvibes Anyhow he's made it though 4 of them so far and it has really peaked his interest in Greek Mythology :thumbsup2 and when looking around online we found out the Lightning Thief will be coming out as a movie 2/12/10. :cool1: Needless to say he'll make his way through the whole series by then (probably a few times over) and it will be neat to compare with him how the Lightning Thief book movie compares to the book.

So far Beacon Street Girls is a huge hit - she has requested that I get the rest of the series from the library! I think she will also really like Sweet Valley Twins. My library didn't have them, but I put in a request so some should be ready soon. She did read those Main Street ones already and loved those. She wants Ann Martin to write more books.

Thank you all so much! I am making a list of all these ideas so I can keep her busy reading.

There is a 3 series of books by Ann Martin and Laura Godwin
called The Doll People. There is also The Meanest Doll in the World and Runaway Dolls. I read the first with my daughter who is almost 7 and we are in the middle of the second one. She loves them, at 10 your DD could read them herself. They are really good! And I believe one of the authors is the same as the babysitters club.

My DD really liked the Magic Tree house series.
She also like the Boys vs. the girls series, and the Tail of Emily Windsnap.
I think 10 is a great age for Beverley Clearly books and also the Little House series. Oh also Abbey Finkels rules for girls.

If your daughter is into horses a wonderful series you should check out is a series called Horse Angel and it's written by a woman named Angela Dorsey and it's a series centered on an angel named Angelica who helps various characters and their horses in many different situations and is very cool. The Horse Angel series was originally sold by Pony Club but when Pony Club quit selling them a company called Enchanted Pony Books now owns them and the series is retitled Horse Guardian. Other horse books your daughter might like are the Sandy Lane Stables series and Thoroughbred series too
