How much is everyone's book rental for the kids this year? DD7 is going into second grade and her books are going to be $94. Better than last year! :cheer2: Just wanted some comparison around the country/world.

What book rental prices? Do you mean for school books? I seriously have never heard of this before. If that's what you mean then we don't pay anything. Kids get their text books, we cover them and they return them hopefully in the same condition at the end of the year.

Yes, I mean school books. That's nice that you don't have to pay anything for school books. Do you pay any fees for school at all?

In my part of NJ, we don't pay any fees at all, just send in the school supplies from the list.

I thought this was some type of book rental program like dvd rental. Ah well, one can only wish!

we haven't gotten ours yet. Last year DD's were $125 for the 3rd grade. DS's will be a freshman and I expect his will be close to $300. When our oldest was a freshman his were $280 and that was 7 years ago. I have budgeted $1,000 for supplies and bookfees and deposits.

When DS registers he also has school pictures taken and will need a sports pass and DD will need a deposit for afterschool care.

I just plan on handing them my checkbook and praying there is enough left for license plates that are also due this month and will be another $500.

Gotta love living in Indiana!!

No book rental fee here. We do have a parking sticker to buy for DS's car, yearbooks, club fees, yearbook pictures, school shirts, band uniform fee, band shirts to buy, etc. It all adds up.

Indiana can't be the only place they have book rental, is it? I never imagined that there were schools with out it! I have certainly learned something new today. :teacher:

No book rental fees in Massachusetts that I have ever heard about - I don't think anywhere in New England has book rental fees.

Of course, I pay mucho big bucks for property taxes, though.

I've never in my 30 years heard of this!

I've never heard of having to rent textbooks for school, thats nuts LOL....our school they actually get one set to keep at home and one for school so they don't have to carry the heavy books home every night.

I am shocked at what you have to pay in school fees. This is for public school, right? We do not have book rental fees in my area of Michigan. What about families that simply can't afford that?

I've never heard of any in Texas either. Only time you h ave to pay that I know of is if you lose the books. I've learned something new today.

I think we are one of the few states that still have large ones. I think some states have smaller ones, but not the several hundred dollars per child ones.

Yes, it is for public school. The ones that cant afford it fill out papers and they get them for free just as they do for free lunches. Of course, now that I know that other states don't even charge for book rental, that makes me a little upset. Because to fill out those forms for free books, it feels as if you are getting on welfare. Hmmmm...This has really got me thinking.

We don't have book rental in Chicago in the public schools. My DD is going in 7th grade and this year her fees are---

$45 for workbooks and the yearbook at the end of the year.
$25 optional sport fee if they want to play any or all sports
$5 school lock, but they can use the one from previous years

Here in PA, at the public schools we don't have to pay rental for books; you only pay if you lose your book. Now, we DO have to pay for field trips, activity fees for marching band, clubs, etc. We've also got pretty high property taxes, though.

I have never heard of that either. I am in MN. The only fees we have are for participation in extra curricular activities, sports, drama, speech, etc. We don't have any kind of registration fees. The kids can pay $25-30 or something for an activity pass that will get them into all the events for the year, but that is a great deal. That is about it.

I will pay $150 per kid for the three in elementary. They are in parochial school, but the fee is the same for public- they use the same book rental company. My high school senior will set me back $283 (63 does include her parking permit). That's $733 for the kids to set foot into the school before school supplies, year book, pictures, etc. Those all cost more! (We spent $300 on school supplies because of those LISTS already!).

I grew up on the west coast and NEVER heard of book rentals until we moved here 15 years ago. It is incredible- and the books are the same old "old" ones- written in (No, you are not supposed to!), torn, missing pages, etc. If you complain they will occassionally try and find a book in better condition. I actually bought a new math book for my oldest DD one year becaus hers was unreadable. Ugh!
