My 11-year-old, along with his group of friends, is a voracious reader. They have recently glommed onto a series of books by Anthony Horowitz, the Alex Rider Adventures. Scholastic currently has the first book of his new series, The GateKeepers on special for $2.99 (I picked it up at Borders).

If any of you have suggestions for boys of this age group, please contribute.

The kids are reading HOOT in school right now. My oldest read that this past winter, they all like it and his other book and the name escapes me now.

DS11 is reading the Chronicles of Narnia and also likes the Lord of the Rings books. I would guess you have done Harry Potter but if not, they are great books too.

The Redwall series by Brian Jacques OR his Flying Dutchmen series. :)

Has he read Harry Potter? What about Artemis Fowl or Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events?

My DS is an avid reader. His 6th grade LA teacher named him "Sir Books A Lot!"

He's 12 1/2, and loves the Alex Rider series. In fact, we just got Scorpia?? last Sunday, and he finished it in about 2 hours!

Other books he enjoys include:
The Pendragon series by Kevin MacHale (he's read these so much they have fallen apart!)
Artemis Fowl books (and anything else by Erin Coefer)
Anything by Gary Paulsen (the last time we talked about this, there was a DISer who works for him, and DS was soooo impressed!)
Eragon and Eldest
Most things by Cornelia Funke (Inkheart and Dragonrider were particular favorites)

Hope this gives you some ideas!

That's funny. :teeth:

He's read all of the books listed in the above messages, except for the Pendragon and Paulsen books. I'll have to check those out. Thanks so much for your suggestions.

The weird thing is that he reads them over and over. Once I've read a book, I'm done with it.

There are some great suggestions here.

A couple more suggestions would be Kingdom Keepers and Peter and the Star Catchers.

The next book in the Peter and the Star Catchers is due out soon, June maybe.

Another series is the Charlie Bone books. There are 4 of them now and the 5th is due out in August. (or maybe there are 3 and the 4th is due in Aug).

Thanks!! My DS will want to get that one. :sunny:

Ok, I had to look it up to satisfy my own curiosity, it is called Peter and the Shadow Thieves and is due out July 15th.

Charlie Bone and the Hidden King came out this past Monday I guess. I will have to pick that up for DS (after he finishes the Hobbit for school though).

FLUSH is the name of the new book and it is as good at HOOT.

All the rest of the books I would reccomend for this age reader, especially boys, have been mentioned except maybe the Deltora Quest books. Kate DiCamillo's The Tale of Desperaux (she wrote Because of Winn-Dixie) is my other favorite for this age group, but since it is a very unconventional love story, it might not appeal to boys even though there is sword fights and dungeons. :teeth: The only other suggestion I have is to find non-fiction books about subjects he enjoys. My boys would rather read a non-fiction book than fiction most days!

I loved the "Tripods Trilogy" by John Christopher (still do). The three books are known as...

The White Mountains
The City of Gold and Lead
The Pool of Fire

There is a fourth one written much, much later but it felt rushed and was unmemorable.

Ender's Game was really good. (Orson Scott Card)

Also, they may be edging into a slightly older crowd, but the 'Myth" series ( Another Fine Myth, Hit or Myth, Myth Directions, Myth Conceptions, etc) or the Phule series (Phule's Company, Phule's Paradise, A Phule And His Money, Phule Me Twice, No phule Like An Old Phule) by Robert Asprin are humorous and full of puns, though for that age I'd go with the Myth series first.
