Can we book on the ship using DVC points? How does this work?

The way it has worked for us in the past is they give you a little card with instructions to call when you get off the ship. The card did not seem necessary because I believe you have 3 business days to call DVC and book your next cruise. I have found the discounted points to be well worth it. We have actually booked all 3 of our cruises on points despite what others say about it not being a good deal. One advantage is if you book another cruise that is sooner, rather than later, that normally would have cost you more cash because the price goes up as it gets closer to sailing, stays the same with DVC. For example when we got off the ship in May we rebooked a cruise for October. We thought about booking with cash but couldn't bear the thought that it was costing X amount more than if we had booked it a year in advance. But since we booked on points, discounted because we had just gotten off the Magic, the points are the same no matter whether you book 2 months or 10 months out. Only problem is you can only book your 11 month window I believe. Although there was something about 14 months on our card they gave us--I just don't remember what it was. Hope this helps some.

Thx Deb, that's my problem. I want to sail in about a year and DVC told me to wait until 11 months to book and I do want to save a few points onboard if possible.

I don't think this will help you unless you are in that 11 month window. We told the woman on the ship last week we were thinking about 2006 Eastern--she said the only thing we could do was book late 2005 and then transfer the ressie when 2006 opens up--but when DH said we might use points she said she couldn't help us that far out.

It shouldn't be a problem to get the discounted points price and you don't need to book onboard...here's what they told me a few weeks ago. I was interested in the points cost for 2 adults for a cruise in Nov. 2005. She gave me the amounts and during the conversation I mentioned that we had just gotten back from our first Disney Cruise and were wanting to cruise again in Nov. 2005 for our 25th wedding anniversary. She said "Oh, so you will be repeat cruisers, then?" When I told her yes, she said that as long as I book within 3 days of the 11 month window, we get a reduced points price. Here is the info she gave me:

4 night Disney Wonder, November 27, 2005, Cat. 6 for 2 adults

If booked within 3 busness days of Dec. 27, 2004
137 points per person (total points for two people - 274)
If paying one person in cash - 137 points plus $917

If booked after that 152 points per person (total points for two people - 304)
If paying one person cash - 152 points person plus $1017

Hope this helps! I have this information attached to my calendar so that I don't forget to do it on Dec. 27th!
