Book Exchange for Kindergarten?

For any others reading this for ideas, I agree to stay away from popular characters or such things. Gravitate toward the Dr. Seuss readers, Elephant and Piggie Readers, If You Give A ___ A ___ serries or other such good quality books. I know my DD is not allowed to watch Sponge Bob, Hannah Montana or other such shows. (Really we don't do much TV so my DD may not even know who those characters are.) I also would not approve of The Magic Tree House books for a 5 year old. Maybe that's just our old fashioned views, but I still don't think you can go wrong with some good picture books or easy readers.

When I taught young children, I always gave them Little Bear by Else Holmund Minarik. It is an "I can read" book...perfect for beginning readers, and so charming!!!! There are other books in the series, but Little Bear and his friends have wide appeal.

I'm also late to the game but here are a couple that aren't too trendy that dd loves (and I love, too!!):

The Chicken of the Family by Mary Amato

Duck and Goose and Duck Duck Goose by Tad Hills

Chester by Melanie Watt

Thanks everyone so much for your suggestions! I found a boxed set of the first four magic tree house books on Barnes and Noble for $9 so I went with that.

I think that's an excellent choice. I read all of them to DD in Kindergarten and see nothing wrong with them for a 6 year old. She read them to herself over and over the next few years. She didn't care as much for picture books by then. I volunteered in the school library and the librarian had me start reading them to the classes.

DS's preschool does the same thing and the kids just love the new books they get. Now their school specifies a little more that it be a hardback book, unisex and non-holiday between $12.00 and $15.00 so that everyone is kind of going to get the same quality of book they handed in. I bought Dooby, Dooby Moo one of the sequels to Click, Clack Moo for DS to exchange. They also play a passing type game to see what book they end up with and then all books are actually unwrapped at home. DS loves it and is looking forward to his holiday party and book exchange next Wed.

Another neat gift exchange idea just to throw out there since I thought if was original and not toy related is that DD's teachers in K & 1 did a handmade gift exchange. The children were to make handmade inexpensive items to be exchanged. DD made some mosiac art pictures. One year she received a house made of out a deck of Christmas themed cards and the other she received a tree ornament.
